Men's Basketball Earns 20th Win in 61-54 Defeat of Stevens

Center Valley, PA (February 14, 2023) - The DeSales University men's basketball team used a solid defensive performance and a strong effort from its bench, earning its 20th win of the season in a 61-54 victory over Stevens in MAC Freedom action on Tuesday evening in Billera Hall.

  • The Bulldogs earn the season sweep of the Ducks and improve to 7-2 all-time with their fourth straight win overall.
  • DeSales wins its 20th game of the season, the 15th time in school history and for the 14th time under head coach Scott Coval.
How it Happened
  • DeSales was out quickly in this one opening up an 9-2 lead as senior Darnell Vaughan Jr. got the start on senior day and scored five quick points.
  • The lead swelled to as many as 12 points (22-10) early before Stevens chipped away and got within two points (26-24) with 2:56 left in the opening half as DSU finished the first 20 minutes on a 7-2 run to take a 33-26 halftime lead.
  • After trading baskets to start the second-half, the Ducks used a 17-7 run ot take a three-point lead (45-42) at the 10:31 mark of the second half.
  • The Bulldogs countered with an 11-0 spurt led by first-year Nate Ellis who scored four points and handed out two assists during the run as DSU led 53-45 at the 7:46 mark.
  • Stevens got within four on a three with 1:04 to go before DSU clinched the win with three free throws late.
Top Bulldog Performers For the Foes
  • Jack Spellman finished with a double-double of 19 points and 14 rebounds.
  • Mike Goodall had 20 points for the Ducks.
Inside the Box Score
  • The Bulldogs held Stevens to just 37.7 percent shooting and hit 43.1 percent on the offensive end.
  • DSU took excellent care of the ball with just six turnovers.
  • DeSales got 42 of its 61 points from the bench, out-scoring the Stevens bench, 42-9.
