Women's Lacrosse Comeback Falls Just Short in 17-16 Loss to Lycoming

Center Valley, PA (March 29, 2023) - Sophomore Meagan Landers and senior Marina Bradley each scored four goals but a late comeback by the DeSales University women's lacrosse team fell just short in a 17-16 loss to Lycoming College in the MAC Freedom season opener for both teams on Wednesday afternoon.

The Basics
  • Final Score: Lycoming - 17, DeSales - 16
  • Records: DeSales (3-7, 0-1 MAC Freedom); Lycoming (4-4, 1-0 MAC Freedom)
  • It is the third straight loss for the Bulldogs in the all-time series with the Warriors.
How it Happened
  • After a low scoring first quarter the Warriors took control of this one out-scoring the Bulldogs 7-4 in the second quarter to take a 8-5 lead at the half.
  • Lycoming scored the first goal of the third quarter to take a four-goal lead.
  • DeSales responded after that scoring five straight goals, led by two from first-year Hailey Linebaugh, to take a 10-9 lead.
  • The Warriors reclaimed the advantage with two straight goals but the Bulldogs finished the quarter with three straight goals, two by Landers to take a 13-11 lead into the final quarter.
  • After trading goals to start the quarter, DeSales was called for back-to-back non-releasable yellow cards, putting them man-down for close to three minutes.
  • LC scored two goals during that time frame to take a 15-14 lead and added two more goals to lead 17-14 with 1:52 left.
  • The Bulldogs showed no quit as Landers and Bradley scored back-to-back goals in the span of 34 seconds to pull DSU within one with 1:06 to go but Lycoming won the ensuing draw control and ran out the clock on the DSU comeback.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Bradley finished with a team-high four goals and three assists for seven points. She now has 94 career goals, just six shy of becoming the first player in team history to score 100 goals and become the all-time leader.
  • Landers added four goals and one assist for five points.
  • Linebaugh (6 draw controls), senior Amanda Schultz, and first-year Christina DiGuglielmo each had two goals.
  • Senior Dani Towey and junior Hayley Petrosini each scored once, while Petrosini added six draw controls.
  • Sophomore Michaela Regan had four saves.
For the Foes
  • Katie Maguire led the Warriors with six goals and one assist.
  • Riley Block had five goals and one assist.
  • Zoe Stauffer made 13 saves in goal.
Inside the Box Score
  • The Bulldogs dominated the stat sheet with a 39-24 advantage in shots and a 24-18 edge in ground balls.
  • DSU won 23 draw controls as compared to just 14 for the Warriors.
  • DeSales was 5-for-9 in free position shots.
