#15 DeSales Seasons Ends in NCAA Second Round with Loss to #1 NYU

Center Valley, PA (March 2, 2024) - The #15 DeSales University women's basketball team saw its historic season come to an end in a 93-59 loss to the #1 NYU in the second round of the NCAA Division III Tournament on Saturday evening in Billera Hall.

  • Final Score: #1 NYU - 93, #15 DeSales - 59
  • Records: #15 DeSales (26-3 overall); #1 NYU (27-0 overall)
  • DSU's season comes to an end with 26 wins for the second time in team history, one shy of tying the school-record of 27 wins.
  • The loss snaps a 19-game winning streak and a 10-game home win streak.
  • DeSales falls to 1-5 all-time vs. NYU in what was the first meeting between the two teams since the 1998-99 season.
How it Happened
  • The undefeated Violets came out firing in this one scoring the first 12 points of the game before the Bulldogs battled back to stay within nine (22-13) at the end of the first quarter.
  • DSU cut the lead to five (24-19) after back-to-back layups from seniors Olivia Scotti and Lindsey Welsh early in the second quarter.
  • NYU's Caroline Peper answered with consecutive three-pointers to push the margin back up to nine points.
  • The lead swelled to 17 for the visitor's mid-way thru the second quarter but the Bulldogs showed no quit getting within 13 at the halftime break.
  • It was all NYU in the second-half as the Violets shot lights out in the third quarter building a 33 point lead after three quarters of play and never looked back in the fourth.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Senior Mikaela Reese and senior Lindsey Welsh each finished with a team-high 15 points, with Welsh pulling down a team-best nine rebounds and Reese tallying two blocks.
  • Senior Megan Bealer added 10 points.
  • Scotti had nine points and seven rebounds.
For the Foes
  • Natalie Bruns finished with a double-double of 20 points and 10 rebounds, adding six assists and three blocks.
  • Morgan Morrison totalied 17 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks.
  • Peper came off the bench to hit six 3's for 18 points and Erica Miller had four 3's and 12 points.
Inside the Box Score
  • Both teams took excellent care of the ball combining for just 19 turnovers.
  • NYU finished the game shooting 57.6 percent from the floor.
  • The Violets out-rebounded the Bulldogs, 42-35, and the NYU bench out-scored DSU's pine squad, 30-3.
