Stong Scores Game-Winner in 3-2 OT Win over Widener on Homecoming

Center Valley, PA (September 28, 2024) - Junior Jordyne Stong scored just 1:31 into the first overtime leading the DeSales University field hockey team to a 3-2 come-from-behind win over Widener University in non-conference action on Homecoming Saturday afternoon.

The Basics
  • Final Score: DeSales - 3, Widener - 2 (OT)
  • Records: DeSales (2-6 overall), Widener (4-4 overall)
  • This win snapped a three-game losing streak to the Pride and was just DSU's second ever in the series moving DeSales to 2-9 all-time vs. Widener.
How it Happened
  • Neither team found the back of the cage in the first-half as the game was locked in a scoreless tie thru the first 30 minutes.
  • DeSales had a chance to take a 1-0 lead on a stroke but the shot went wide very early in the third quarter.
  • Widener took advantage scoring twice in the span of 1:55 to take a 2-0 lead 6:49 into the third quarter.
  • Senior Maddie Trocki cut the margin in half 52 seconds after the Pride's second goal on a reverse stick shot.
  • The Bulldogs then tied the game just 2:15 later as junior Angelina Day scored on a stroke tying the game at two.
  • Neither team was able to score in the fourth quarter as the game advanced into overtime.
  • Very early in the first OT period, DSU earned a corner and on that corner junior Nikki Chiaradia found Stong alone in the box as she scored into the open cage after a centering pass from Chiaradia.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Trocki's goal was the first of the season and the 44th of her career tying her with Tyra Wingle for the all-time lead.
  • She also recorded her 109th career point also tying her first all-time with Hall of Famer Ashley Sparango.
  • Stong tallied her team-best third of the season and Day scored her first.
  • Sophomore Alyssa Schlossman had six saves in the win. 
For the Foes
  • Alina Culver and Katie Haye each scored for the Pride.
  • Abby Blake also made six saves in goal for Widener.
Inside the Box Score
  • DeSales had a slim 15-14 advantage in shots, 9-8 in shots on goal.
  • Widener enjoyed a 9-7 edge in penalty corners.
