Men's Basketball Drops Heartbreaker on Last Second Three, 70-69, at King's

Center Valley, PA (February 5, 2025) - King's College hit a last second three from the left wing with four seconds left leading to a 70-69 win over the DeSales University men's basketball team in MAC Freedom action on Wednesday evening.

The Basics
  • Final Score: King's - 70, DeSales - 69

  • The loss splits the season series and snaps an 18-game win streak for the Bulldogs in the series.
  • DSU is now 48-25 all-time vs. the Monarchs.
How it Happened
  • DSU trailed 9-8 early before taking control with a 19-6 run over the span of 5:21 to take a 27-15 lead with 9:21 left in the opening half.
  • DeSales went ice cold over the next five minutes scoring just point as King's chipped away at the lead, taking a 30-28 lead with 4:47 remaining and continued to lead by two (37-35) at the break.
  • The Bulldogs continued to struggle to score at the start of the second-half and KC took advantage building a 15-point lead (52-37) at the 15:34 mark.
  • The lead remained 15 with 13:01 left when DeSales used a 13-0 run to get within two points (56-54) at the 7:46 mark.
  • The game went back-and-forth over the next several minutes before DSU scored six straight to take its first lead of the second-half (66-64) on two free throws from first-year Jayden Thomas with 1:29 left to play.
  • After a missed 3 on the other end, King's got the offensive rebound and took a one-point lead on a three-point play dunk with 54 seconds left.
  • Out of a timeout, senior Devin Atkinson scored on a driving lay-up to give DeSales a 68-67 lead with 41 seconds left.
  • The Bulldogs got a stop on the other end and senior Caleb Gibbs was fouled with 18 ticks left.
  • Gibbs made just 1-of-2 freebies and the Monarchs called timeout.
  • Out of the timeout KC's Chris Patton got off a desparation 3 from left wing that went in giving the Monarchs a 70-69 lead with four seconds left.
  • DSU had another shot at tying the game but turned the ball over the ensuing inbounds.
  • King's missed the front end of a 1-and-1 but a 3/4 court shot from the Bulldogs missed giving King's the victory.
Top Bulldog Performers
  • Gibbs finished with a double-double, 15 points and 11 rebounds, in the loss.
  • Atkinson had 12 points and seven boards and Thomas finished with 12 points.
  • First-year Luke Keppel had 10 points off the bench.
For the Foes
  • Patton led all scorers with 23 points.
  • Jawane Buckner added 13 points and eight assists.
  • Garrett Burys had 11 points and four blocks.
Inside the Box Score
  • DeSales was hurt by 19 turnovers that lead 25 King's points, while the Monarchs committed just seven miscues, leading to 12 more shots taken.
  • The Bulldogs dominated the glass out-rebounding the Monarchs, 42-20.
  • DSU also had a large advantage at the free throw line making 16-for-21 as compared to just 5-for-6 for King's.
