Union, NJ (March 19, 2025) - The DeSales University softball team split a non-conference doubleheader at Kean University winning game one, 12-3, before dropping game two, 5-2 on Wednesday afternoon.
Game One (W/12-3)
A five-run second inning saw DSU take an early 5-0 lead that was all started on a two-run RBI single from
Kiara Castera. A fielding error by the Cougars resulted in the Bulldogs capitalizing and putting up three unearned runs.
DeSales got some more insurance runs in the fifth inning on RBI singles from Castera and junior
Ava Goodman as part of a three-run frame to push the lead up to 8-0. Kean trimmed the deficit by scoring one run in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the sixth inning to cut the Bulldog lead down to 8-3.
DSU put this game out for good in the top of the seventh inning as they plated four runs and the final tally to take game one. Castera had another RBI single and sophomore
Paige Hromin hit a two-run double in the inning.
Senior
Rachel Lowry earned the win pitching five and 1/3 innings scattering six hits and allowing three runs while striking out two. Junior
Riley Long tossed one and 2/3 scoreless in relief.
Castera finished 4-for-4 with a team-leading four RBIs and scored two runs. Goodman finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and one RBI. Hromin tallied three RBIs in the win.
Game Two (L/2-5)
DSU fell behind early as Kean scored once in the first, once in the second, twice in the third inning to take a 4-0 lead after three innings of play.
The Cougars added one more run in the bottom of the fifth inning to increase the margin up to 5-0.
Senior
Madison Kelly hit a two-run home run in the top of the seventh inning to cut the deficit down to three, but the rally was too little too late as Kean held on for the doubleheader split.
Goodman went 2-for-3 while Kelly went 1-for-2 with two RBIs and one scored.
First-year
Ava DiDonato suffered the loss allowing three earned runs in three innings pitched. Senior
Tabitha Lawless had a solid outing in relief pitching three scoreless innings.
The Bulldogs are back in action on Saturday when they travel to Lebanon Valley College for a doubleheader to MAC Freedom play with game one set to begin at 1:00 pm.
