Baseball Drops Extra Innings Affair to Penn State Harrisburg, 12-11

Middletown, PA (March 4, 2025) - The DeSales University baseball team blew an eight run lead to send the game into extra innings but Penn State Harrisburg walked it off in the bottom of the 10th to take the high scoring affair, 12-11, in non-conference action at Nittany Field on Tuesday afternoon.

PSH took the early first inning lead in this one as an RBI single by Johansen gave the Nittany Lions the 1-0 lead at the end of the first inning.

A second inning offensive explosion saw the Bulldogs put up nine runs on the board that was all started with three consecutive RBI walks from senior Justin DeStaso, sophomore Ty Akins, and first-year Matt DeStaso. As part of the nine-run second inning first-year Jacob Rivera and graduate student Travis Kerr each had an RBI single, while graduate student Gavin Zavorski capped off the frame with a grand slam to right field to put DSU up 9-1.

The Nittany Lions would cut into the deficit in the bottom of the second inning on a bases-clearing double to narrow the Bulldog lead to five runs (9-4). PSH kept the rally going in the third inning on a two-run home run to get within three, but Zavorski would respond in the top of the fourth with a two-run single to push the lead back up to 11-6.

The late innings did not go the Bulldogs way as a costly fielding error in the eighth inning would result in three unearned runs to score for the Nittany Lions to make it a one-run game (11-10) heading into the 9th. PSH would score the game-tying run in the 9th on an RBI up the middle to send the game into extras where the Nittany Lions would walk it off on a hit by pitch.

Junior Andrew McGowan suffered the loss allowing one unearned run in the 10th inning.

Zavorski finished 3-for-5 with two runs scored and six RBIs, senior Colin Houck had two hits and scored once, and junior JT Anderosky had one hit and two runs scored.

DSU is back in action on their spring break trip to San Antonio, TX with four games slated for the trip before returning home on March 17th in the MAC Freedom opening series against Delaware Valley with first pitch set for 3:30 pm.
