Al Weiner

Head men’s cross country and track & field coach Al Weiner is entering his 40th season in charge of the DeSales cross country team and his 32nd season as head coach of the men’s track and field team.
 
Weiner has enjoyed tremendous team and individual success throughout his tenure highlighted by winning two MAC CC Championships in 2007 and 2023. He has also guided the Bulldogs to nine top 10 finishes at the NCAA CC Regional Championships including the first in 2002 (10th) and DSU’s best-ever finish at the regional meet in 2023 in fifth place.
 
The Bulldogs have also enjoyed outstanding success in track & field under Weiner winning their first-ever MAC Championship in the spring of 2011, taking home the 2011 MAC Outdoor Track & Field Championship in which Weiner earned Coach of the Year honors.  Prior to that, DSU had finished second or third in each of the previous five MAC Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field Championship meets and have finished among the top five all but five times since 2008 in both the MAC Indoor and Outdoor T&F Championships.
 
Individually, Weiner has had a few runners excel individually on the national level including DSU Hall of Famer, Jamie Hibell, who earned All-American honors in the 5,000-meters in track & field in 1997.  Mike Vidumsky earned All-American honors in cross country twice and finished 11th in 2004, Lou Corominas earned All-American honors three times in the 400-meters in track & field, and Matthew Kraus won the Elite 90 award twice for indoor track in 2020 and outdoor track in 2021. In addition Kraus was a two-time national qualifier in the 800-meters earning All-American honors in Indoor Track in 2020 and was a three-time Academic All-American.  Vic Longo, Andrew Ferretti, Nate Noll, Gabe Lamm, and Kraus have earned five NCAA Post-Graduate Scholarships.
 
Weiner owns an impressive running background.  He was team captain and most valuable runner in cross-country and track at Whitehall High School.  He set school records in the two-mile run and two-mile relay, and was the Lehigh Valley League champion in both events, setting a league record in the two-mile.  He was a three-time district champion and recorded a 10th-place finish in the two-mile at the Pennsylvania State Championship Meet.
 
He continued his running career at Kutztown (Pa.) University where he set school records in the mile and 1,500-meter runs.  He placed sixth in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference in the 1500 meters as a senior and was named to the All-PSAC Team.  While at Kutztown, he was cross-country captain as a senior and track captain as a junior and senior.
 
Weiner graduated from Kutztown University in 1979 with a degree in business administration.  In addition to coaching both the men’s cross-country and track teams here at DeSales, Weiner serves the University as the equipment manager. He was named the DeSales University Staff Employee of the Year in 2025.
 
Weiner resides in Northampton, PA, with his wife Lisa and their two children, Ryan and Kelly.
