Elizabethtown, PA (January 19, 2008) – In a match-up of one loss teams in the Mid-Atlantic Region, a well rested Elizabethtown College team halted the DeSales University men's basketball team's eight game winning streak with an 80-69 win in Thompson Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
The game was back and forth for most of the first 12 minutes as E-Town (playing its first game in a week) clung to a 23-19 lead after a lay-up from senior Eddie Ohlson (Allentown, PA/Parkland) with eight minutes left in the half.
The Blue Jays took control for the rest of the half extending its four-point advantage to 16 points, 35-19, with a 12-0 run over the next three minutes and after five straight points from DeSales (playing its third straight road contest) cut the margin down to 11, Elizabethtown finished the half on an 11-1 run to take a 46-25 lead into the locker room.
The Bulldogs scored just six points over the last eight minutes of the half, while E-Town totaled 23 points. DSU, uncharacteristically, committed 17 turnovers in the opening half leading to 19 Blue Jay points and the Bulldogs shot just 36 percent from the field as compared to 54.8 percent for Elizabethtown.
The lead swelled to as many as 32 points (65-33) in the second half at the 12:10 mark before the Bulldog reserves entered the game and out-scored the Blue Jay reserves 36-15 over the final 12 minutes to provide the 11-point margin.
Sophomore Darnell Braswell (Allentown, PA/William Allen) led the scoring for DeSales with 11 points. Junior Ed Lapinski (Red Hill, PA/Upper Perkiomen) totaled nine points (all in the first half) and seven boards and fellow junior Matt Zwetolitz (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) had eight points off the bench. Freshman Eddie Ward (Dallastown, PA/Dallastown) played terrific in the second half scoring 10 points and adding four assists.
Chad Piersol had 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting from the field to lead the scoring attack for Elizabethtown. Mike Schatzmann added 16 points and Mike Church also totaled double digits with 12 points as the Blue Jays finished the game shooting 54.4 percent from the field and out-rebounding the Bulldogs, 34-28, for the game.
