BOX SCORE

Center Valley, PA (October 29, 2008) – The DeSales University field hockey team was officially eliminated from the Freedom Conference playoff race with a 4-1 loss to Alvernia College on Wednesday afternoon in the final home game of the season.

In a game that featured very cold temperatures and a hail storm midway thru the first half, the Bulldogs were out-shot 20-9, by the Crusaders as each team had seven penalty corners. The loss drops DSU to 7-11 overall and 1-6 in the Freedom, while AU improves to 9-8 overall and 3-3 in the Freedom.

After neither team was able to score in the opening half, Alvernia got on the board first when Kaitlin Prutzman scored off a feed from Janelle Lynch. DSU tied the score at one just under four minutes later when junior Catherine McGrillen (Ballymena, Northern Ireland) scored unassisted, her eighth goal of the year at the 48:11 mark.

The Crusaders needed just 16 seconds to re-take the lead as Katy Eby scored off a feed from Samantha Landis and Lynch gave AU its first two-goal lead of the game just 1:59 later when she scored off an assist from Eby. Tonya Rutt provided the final margin at the 62:54 mark when her shot caromed off a DSU stick and up over the goalie's head into the cage. Prutzman earned an assist on the play.

Senior Marian Karnas (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township) made seven saves in the loss for the Bulldogs.

DeSales will conclude its season on Friday, October 31st when they travel to King's College for a Freedom Conference game beginning at 3:00 pm.
