BOX SCORE
Center Valley, PA (April 11, 2008) – The DeSales University baseball team rallied back twice to defeat King's College, 10-7, in the first game of a three-game weekend series on Friday afternoon at Butz Field on a perfect afternoon for baseball in the Lehigh Valley.
After King's (10-13, 5-8 Freedom) opened up a 3-0 lead with one run in the first inning and two runs in the second inning, the Bulldogs (13-13-1, 6-4 Freedom) rallied for five runs in the bottom of the second inning to take a 5-3 lead. Junior Greg Treat (Concord, NH/Concord), junior Matt Connors (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township), junior Nick Repas (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) and sophomore Derek Moyer (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) each had RBI's during the inning.
The Monarchs tied the game at five with two more runs in the third inning but DSU took a 6-5 lead with one run in the third on an RBI single from senior Andrew Heard (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield). KC regained the advantage (7-6) with two runs in the top of the fifth inning but the Bulldogs tied the game at seven in the bottom of the inning on another RBI single from Heard and took control in the bottom of the sixth inning.
After consecutive bunt singles from Moyer and sophomore Andrew Feher (Riegelsville, PA/Palisades) to start the inning, junior Zac Hess (Harleysville, PA/LaSalle) drove in Feher with a single after Moyer had scored on a wild pitch and senior Scott Matejicka (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) scored on a sacrifice fly from Treat to give DSU a 10-7 lead.
From that point the DeSales pitching staff took over as freshman Jeffrey Pinto (Coopersburg, PA/Southern Lehigh) and sophomore Joe Walsh (Green Brook, NJ/Watchung Hills) blanked the Monarchs over the final 2.2 innings to preserve the three-run victory.
Freshman Andrew Bigatel (Allentown, PA/Dieruff) was terrific earning his first career win pitching 3.1 innings of relief allowing five hits and two runs. Pinto allowed just one hit in 1.2 innings and Walsh earned his fifth save of the season allowing just one hit and striking out one in the ninth.
At the plate Matejicka led way with three hits and three runs scored. Treat and Heard each had two hits and two RBI's, while Moyer and Feher also each had two hits in the win. Eight of the nine Bulldogs starters recorded hits in the win and six of the starters knocked in runs.
