BOX SCORE

Center Valley, PA (April 9, 2008) – Darkness prevailed on Wednesday afternoon as the DeSales University baseball team settled for a tie at 11 with Rutgers-Newark in a non-conference game called due to darkness after 10 innings.

The Bulldogs are now 12-13-1 on the season and the Scarlet Raiders move to 11-12-1 overall. The Scarlet Raiders had control of this game early leading 8-2 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, before DSU rallied for seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to take a 9-8 lead.

In the seventh, junior Nick Repas (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) and freshman Mike Newland (Frenchtown, NJ/Delaware Valley) led off with singles and sophomore Andrew Feher (Riegelsville, PA/Palisades) plated Repas with a double and later scored when junior Zac Hess (Harleysville, PA/LaSalle) cut the margin to 8-6 with a three-run home run. Freshman Tim Fiorito (Mesa, AZ/Seton Catholic) and junior Greg Treat (Concord, NH/Concord) each had RBI doubles to tie the game at eight and sophomore Derek Moyer (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) gave DSU the lead with an RBI single plating Treat.

The Scarlet Raiders rallied for three runs to take an 11-9 lead in the top of the eighth inning but DSU tied the game in the bottom of the ninth with a two-out rally. Newland started the rally with a single, moved to third on a base hit from Feher and scored on a base-knock from Hess, moving Feher to third. Feher scored during the next at-bat on a wild pitch but the Bulldogs left runners on first and second sending the game into extra innings.

Rutgers-Newark had a one-out single in the top of the 10th but was unable to score and the Bulldogs went quietly in the 10th as the game was called due to darkness three hours and 40 minutes after the first pitch was thrown.

Leading an 18-hit attack for the Bulldogs was Feher (3-for-6, three runs) and Moyer (3-for-6). Repas was 2-for-5 with a run scored, Newland came off the bench to go 2-for-2 with two runs scored and Hess finished 2-for-4 with four RBI's. Sophomore Doc Neiman (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) finished the game with two hits and Treat had two hits and scored twice.

Sophomore Joe Walsh (Green Brook, NJ/Watchung Hills) pitched well in relief going 2.2 innings allowing just two hits, one unearned run while striking out two. Freshman Danny Schmiemann (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) also pitched well in his fourth start of the season lasting six innings scattering seven hits and five earned runs.

DeSales returns to the diamond on Friday afternoon when they get back into Freedom Conference play with the first of three games with King's College over the weekend. First pitch is set for 3:30 pm at Butz Field.
