Allentown, PA (April 30, 2008) – The DeSales University baseball team concluded its regular season schedule on Wednesday afternoon topping local rival Muhlenberg College, 16-6, in a game played at Coca-Cola Park (home of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs) to finish the regular season with a 21-18-1 overall record.
The Bulldogs trailed early (4-2 after 2 ½ innings) but tied the game in the bottom of the third, took a 7-4 lead in the bottom of the fifth and broke the game open in the seventh and eight innings with five runs in the seventh and four tallies in the eighth to provide the final margin. Overall, DSU had 18 hits and stole eight bases on the day as 11 different players had hits and seven different Bulldogs knocked in runs in the win.
Senior Scott Matejicka (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) started things off with a two-RBI single in the first inning and junior Greg Treat (Concord, NH/Concord) and sophomore Doc Neiman (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) tied the game in the third with an RBI sacrifice fly and an RBI double. In the fifth, Neiman and sophomore Derek Moyer (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) each had RBI's.
The game was broken open in the seventh when Neiman, Moyer and freshman pinch-hitter Mike Newland (Frenchtown, NJ/Delaware Valley) each had RBI base hits and in the eighth, Moyer, junior Matt Connors (Sewell, NJ/Washington Township) and junior Mike Bianca (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) each had RBI's to push DeSales out to a 16-5 lead.
Freshman Danny Schmiemann (Sea Cliff, NY/North Shore) earned the win pitching two innings of scoreless relief allowing just one hit to improve to 2-2 on the season. Newland came off the bench to go 3-for-3 with two RBI's, junior Zac Hess (Harleysville, PA/LaSalle) scored three runs, Neiman had two hits, two runs and three RBI's, and Moyer and Connors each had three hits and combined to knock in four runs at the bottom of the order.
The Bulldogs will now take Thursday off and will return to action on Friday, May 2nd when they begin its quest for a Freedom Conference championship when they take on Arcadia University in the first round of the Freedom Conference playoffs at 7:30 pm at Quakertown Memorial Park.
