Newark, NJ (May 15, 2008) – The DeSales University baseball team saw its 2008 season come to an end on Thursday afternoon falling to Keystone College, 11-5, in the second round of the NCAA Division Mid-Atlantic Regional held at Bears and Eagles Riverfront Stadium in Newark, NJ.

DSU finishes the season with a 24-20-1 overall record, having won its eighth Freedom Conference Championship and advancing to its ninth NCAA Tournament.

On Thursday, the Bulldogs led early scoring once in the first inning on an RBI fielder's choice from senior Scott Matejicka (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) and once in the second on an RBI single from junior Mike Bianca (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) to take a 2-0 lead.

The Giants cut the lead in half in the third inning with an unearned run but DSU pushed the lead back to two runs in the top of the fifth with junior Nick Repas (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) scored on a throwing error by the Keystone catcher. DeSales had a chance to push one more run across when Matejicka sent a long fly ball to right field with fellow senior Andrew Heard (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield) on third but Heard tripped on his way to home plate and was tug out in a rundown ending the threat.

Keystone took its first lead in the bottom of the fifth inning as they loaded the bases with two outs via a hit by pitch and two walks and then came thru with back-to-back two RBI singles by Giovannie Sanchez and Ray Jackson to take a 5-3 lead.

The Buldogs wasted no time countering KC's first lead scoring twice in the top of the sixth to tie the score at five as junior Zac Hess (Harleysville, PA/LaSalle) scored on a wild pitch and junior Greg Treat (Concord, NH/Concord) crossed home plate on an RBI groundout from sophomore Derek Moyer (Harleysville, PA/Souderton).

The score remained tied entering the bottom of the seventh inning when the Giants took advantage of a lead-off walk, bunting the runner to second and knocking him in with an RBI single off the bat of Angel Fargas with one out. DSU went in order in the eighth inning and Keystone broke the game open in the bottom of the eighth scoring five times on just two hits, two walks and a hit batter.

Senior Mike Concilio (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) took the loss, tossing 2.1 innings allowing just one hit and one run in relief. Repas scored twice and stole one base, while Heard finished his career with one hit and a stolen base and Matejicka had an RBI in his game as a Bulldog.
