Women’s Tennis Opens Freedom Schedule with 6-3 Win over King’s

Sophomore MaryKate Boylan was one of four Bulldogs who won in both singles and doubles on Saturday.

Wilkes-Barre, PA, (September 13, 2008) – The DeSales University women's tennis team opened its 2008 Freedom Conference season with a 6-3 win over King's College in a re-match of the first round of the Freedom Conference playoffs last season.

The Bulldogs (4-0, 1-0 Freedom) started the afternoon by taking two of the three doubles matches to open up a 2-1 lead and won each of the first four singles matches to claim the victory.

In doubles, sophomores Kate Steiner (Walnutport, PA/Northampton) and Jess Smith (Abbottstown, PA/Delone Catholic) were victorious once again winning, 8-5 and sophomore MaryKate Boylan (Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks South) teamed with freshman Christine Petrilla (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert-Hamilton East) to win 9-7 at the No. 2 doubles position.

In singles play Steiner started things with a 6-4, 6-0 win at the No. 1 spot. Smith won easily, 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 2 spot, Boylan earned a hard fought 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) win at the No. 3 spot and Petrilla also won a tough match, 7-6, (7-5), 6-4, at the No. 4 spot.

DeSales will return to action on Wednesday, September 17th when they travel cross-town to take on local rival Moravian College beginning at 4:00 pm.
