BOX SCORE

Center Valley, PA (September 24, 2008) – The DeSales University field hockey team used some stingy defense and some timely scoring to halt its four-game losing skid defeating Albright College, 2-0, in a non-conference game on Wednesday evening at Fasching Fields.

Senior Marian Karnas (Burlington, NJ/Burlington Township) recorded her first career shutout making three saves behind a strong Bulldog defensive effort as DSU (4-5 overall) recorded its third shutout of the season. DeSales held a 15-10 advantage in shots, while Albright (3-5 overall) had a healthy edge in penalty corners, 8-2.

The scoring was started at the 23:04 mark of the first half when sophomores Jamie Matthews (Gilbertsville, PA/Boyertown) and Melissa Gilroy (Shohola, PA/Delaware Valley) connected on Matthews seventh goal of the season when Gilroy sent a pass in front of the cage that Matthews knocked home.

The lead remained late in the second half when junior Catherine McGrillen (Ballymena, Northern Ireland) provided some insurance scoring her second goal of the season and a sweet breakaway. McGrillen dribbled nearly ¾ of the field and fired a shot past a charging Lion keeper and into the cage for an unassisted marker.

The Bulldogs will return to action on Saturday, February 27th when they begin Freedom Conference play. DSU hosts Wilkes University in a Freedom Conference game beginning at Noon. You can follow the game's progress online once again via LIVE stats. You can either click on this LINK or click on the link next to the game on the DeSales Field Hockey SCHEDULE page.
