Women’s Tennis Moves to 2-0; Tops Messiah, 5-4

Sophomores Kate Steiner and Jess Smith were each double winners in the win over Messiah on Wednesday.

Center Valley, PA, (September 3, 2008) – The DeSales University women's tennis team moved to 2-0 overall on the season with a 5-4 win over Messiah College in a non-conference match on a beautiful and sunny Wednesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs started things off with two wins in the three doubles matches as sophomores Kate Steiner (Walnutport, PA/Northampton) and Jess Smith (Abbottstown, PA/Delone Catholic) moved to 2-0 on the season with an 8-1 at the No. 1 doubles position. Sophomore MaryKate Boylan(Doylestown, PA/Central Bucks South) and freshman Christine Petrilla (Hamilton, NJ/Hamilton-Steinert East) followed suit as they 8-5 winners at the No. 2 doubles spot.

Needing just three wins in the six singles matches, DSU got just that as Steiner won at the No. 1 spot, 6-4, 6-0 over Christie McGinley, Smith earned a 6-0, 6-1 win at the No. flight over Katie Marstaller and Petrilla moved to 2-0 on the young season at the No. 4 spot with a come-from-behind 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over Stacey Clark.

DSU takes its show on the road now with three straight matches away from home beginning on Thursday, September 11th when they travel to Immaculata University for a non-conference match beginning at 4:00 pm.
