Doylestown, PA (January 14, 2009) – The 18th ranked DeSales University women's basketball team dominated the first half of play on Wednesday evening and never looked back in a 98-81 win over Delaware Valley College in a Freedom Conference game in James Work Gymnasium.

The Bulldogs (11-2, 6-1 Freedom) shot lights out in the opening twenty minutes building a 15-4 lead early as junior Kaila Wiand (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) scored all 11 of her points during the game opening spurt.

After the Aggies (6-7, 2-4 Freedom) cut the deficit down to three points with eight straight points, DSU took over the game using a 27-5 run over the next seven minutes to take a 42-17 lead. Five different players scored during the run with senior LeighAnn Burke (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) leading the way with eight of the 27 points. The lead grew to as many as 27 points on two different occasions including halftime as DeSales led 57-30.

The second half was an up and down track meet with both teams seemingly scoring at will. DVC was able to score late to cut the deficit down to 17 points on a three-pointer by Missy Milanese with seven seconds left as the final margin was the only time DVC trailed by less than 20 points in the entire second half.

DSU shot 46.6 percent from the field for the game and 50.0 percent from three-point land (13-for-26). The 13 treys broke the school-record for three-pointers in a single game, previously set at 12 last year in a win over Wilkes University. Most of the three-pointers came during the first half when the Bulldogs canned 11-of-17 from long distance after Delaware Valley started the game in a zone.

Burke finished the game with a team-high 23 points on a 5-for-8 effort from downtown and dished out nine assists. She becomes the first player in school history to make 200+ three-pointers in a career in the win. Fellow senior Kim Rarick (Ringtown, PA/North Schuylkill) added 20 points and handed out six assists.

Wiand finished with 11 points, while freshman Megan Bedard (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) led the charge off the bench with 10 points. Sophomore Shaina Dymond (Shickshinny, PA/Northwest) had nine points and nine boards and senior Erica Sovak (Tuxedo, NY/George F. Baker), junior Caitlin Miller (Fogelsville, PA/Northwestern Lehigh), and junior Kelly Magrann (Sinking Spring, PA/Holy Name) each totaled seven points.

The Aggies were led by Kim Vennera who set a new single-game record with 43 points in the losing effort.

The Bulldogs return to the court on Saturday, January 17th when they travel to Cabrini College for a non-conference game beginning at 1:00 pm.
