Center Valley, PA (January 21, 2009) – The #16 DeSales University women's basketball team used another strong defensive effort to win its fourth straight game 64-44 over King's College on Wednesday evening in Freedom Conference action in Billera Hall.

The Bulldogs (13-2, 7-1 Freedom) entered the game ranked #1 in the Freedom Conference in shooting percentage but on Wednesday they relied on their defense to earn them a win after struggling mightily in the opening half to put the ball in the basket. King's (6-11, 4-4 Freedom) also struggled shooting the rock, finishing just 12-for-52 (23.1%) from the field for the game. After converting just 26.1 percent in the first half, DSU rebounded in the second half to shoot 41.4 percent and pull away for the 20-point win.

A first-half struggle for both teams on the offensive end finished with DeSales using a 13-2 run to take a 26-15 lead before a three-pointer from senior Kaitlyn Fiorino at the first-half buzzer cut the margin down to five points, 29-24, at the break. Senior Kim Rarick (Ringtown, PA/North Schuylkill) was the difference for DeSales going 4-for-4 from the field and scoring 14 points in the first twenty minutes.

The second half was all Bulldogs as they scored the first eight points of the half and after leading by eight (43-35) at the 12:54 mark, DSU went on a 14-0 run highlighted by consecutive three-pointers from junior Kaila Wiand (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) to take a 57-35 lead and never looked back.

DeSales out-rebounded the Lady Monarchs, 44-38 and forced 21 turnovers in the win. Both teams shot well from the charity stripe including the Bulldogs who went 17-for-19 (89.5%) from the line.

Rarick finished with 21 points on 3-of-4 shooting from long distance and a perfect 8-for-8 from the line. She also added five steals. Junior Caitlin Miller (Fogelsville, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) finished with 10 points and a team-high nine boards and Wiand also reached double figures with 10 tallies.

Senior LeighAnn Burke (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) was held to eight points, none in the opening half and freshman Cherelle Simmons (Lancaster, PA/JP McCaskey) had nine points and seven rebounds. Freshman Megan Bedard (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) played well off the bench with six points.

Fiorino finished with 13 points and freshman Brittany Muscatell added 10 points and five boards in the loss. Krystina Durako had eight points and six rebounds off the bench for King's.
