#14 Bulldogs Score Important Road Win, 70-47, at Manhattanville

Purchase, NY (January 29, 2009) – The 14th ranked DeSales University women's basketball team earned an important road win and the season sweep of Manhattanville College on Thursday evening in Kennedy Gymnasium with a 70-47 win over the Valiants.

The Bulldogs improve to 15-2 overall and 9-1 in the Freedom Conference. MC falls to 9-9 overall and 6-4 in the Freedom. DeSales never trailed in the game and led by as many as 26 points late in the second half before posting the 23-point win. DSU forced 24 Valiant turnovers and held MC to 30.0 percent (18-for-60) shooting overall.

Tied at two to start the game, the Bulldogs scored the next 11 points with all five starters each scoring a bucket including a three-pointer from junior Kaila Wiand (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) to take a 13-2 lead.

MVille chipped away at the deficit over the next few minutes and pulled within eight before DSU's senior trio combined for seven straight points including a triple from LeighAnn Burke (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) to take a 15-point lead. DeSales continued to lead by double digits and when Burke stole the ball and converted a fast-break lay-up as time expired; DSU had its largest lead of the night, 18 points, heading into the locker room.

The Bulldogs shot a blistering 51.7 percent from the field in the opening half and held the Valiants to just 22.6 percent shooting. The second half was all DeSales as the lead never went below 15 points and the Bulldogs held its sixth opponent under 50 points this season.

Burke and fellow senior Kim Rarick (Ringtown, PA/North Schuylkill) again combined for a big scoring effort with 39 total points. Burke had a game-high 22 points and added four assists and four steals, while Rarick finished with 17 points and dished out five assists and made three steals.

Junior Caitlin Miller (Fogelsville, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) finished with nine points and pulled down a game-high 14 rebounds and Wiand added nine points and three blocks. Freshman Cherelle Simmons (Lancaster, PA/JP McCaskey) also played well with four points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and four blocks.

Senior Olivia Nastasi led the Valiants with a team-high 16 points on 6-of-17 shooting as the only player in double digits.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday, January 31st when they return home to host FDU-Florham in another Freedom Conference game beginning at 1:00 pm. Once again for those unable to attend you can either follow long via LIVE stats or listen via LIVE audio.
