Center Valley, PA (January 31, 2009) – An 84-52 win coupled with a Manhattanville loss at Eastern sees the DeSales University men's basketball team return to first place in the Freedom Conference all by themselves as the Bulldogs controlled all forty minutes in the win over FDU-Florham on Saturday afternoon in Billera Hall.

DSU (16-3, 9-2 Freedom) jumped out to a 13-3 lead and never really looked back in this one as the Bulldogs shot 56.9 percent from the field and went 13-for-24 (54.2 percent) from three-point land in the win. FDU-Florham (7-13, 5-6 Freedom) entered the game as the best three-point shooting team in the conference and ranked 10th from long-distance in the entire nation, but the DeSales defense forced them into a 5-for-20 afternoon from the beyond the arc.

Leading by 10 early, The Devils did chip away at the lead and trailed by just six points (25-19) forcing a 30-second timeout from DeSales' head coach Scott Coval. Out of the timeout, junior Rob Schubach (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) hit a three-pointer and the Bulldogs scored seven straight points to push the lead up to 13 points, 32-19. The Bulldogs continued to lead by double digits (10 points) with under a minute to play before senior Matt Zwetolitz (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) and sophomore Brian Hunter (Allentown, PA/Emmaus) each hit three-pointers to give DSU a 40-24 halftime advantage.

The second half was all Bulldogs as the lead grew to as many as 35 points (83-48) before the final tally was posted. DSU improved on its 51.6 percent shooting clip in the second half by canning 63.0 percent (17-of-27). The Bulldogs dominated the boards, out-rebounding the Devils, 42-23, including grabbing 12 offensive rebounds.

Five players reached double figures including senior Ed Lapinski (Red Hill, PA/Upper Perkiomen), junior Darnell Braswell (Allentown, PA/William Allen), Schubach, and freshman Bob Zanneo (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) who each had a team-high 12 points. Lapinski and Braswell each had a team-high nine rebounds, while Zanneo and Schubach combined to go 8-for-9 from three-point land.

Hunter added 10 points and dished out four assists, junior Jim Malatesta (Warminster, PA/Archbishop Wood) finished with four points, eight rebounds, six assists, and three steals, and Zwetolitz continued his hot shooting with nine points.

FDU-Florham got 12 points from freshman Adam Katz and 10 points from fellow freshman Martin Johnson off the bench in the loss.

DSU returns to action on Wednesday, February 4th when they host Wilkes University in a Freedom Conference game beginning at 8:00 pm.
