Center Valley, PA (January 31, 2009) – The 14th ranked DeSales University women's basketball team finished the month of January with a convincing, 64-44, win over FDU-Florham in a Freedom Conference game on Saturday afternoon to extend its winning streak to seven straight.

The Bulldogs (16-2, 10-1 Freedom) now own a three-game lead over both Manhattanville and Alvernia in the Freedom Conference standings heading into the final month of the season. DSU took excellent care of the ball on Saturday committing just eight turnovers and dishing out 19 assists in the win. FDU (9-11, 3-8 Freedom), who controlled the boards, 49-36, enjoying a sizable height advantage starting four forwards and one center, was guilty of 19 turnovers in the loss.

The Devils took a 4-0 lead over the first 2:20 of the game before DSU's quickness took over. The Bulldogs embarked on an 18-1 run after trailing in the early going and never looked back from there. Five different players scored during the run including senior LeighAnn Burke (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) who led the way with seven of the 18 tallies.

The lead swelled to as many as 19 points in the opening half as DeSales shot 42.4 percent from the field and FDU converted just 28.0 percent over the first twenty minutes.

The second half was more of the same as the Bulldogs extended its 17-point halftime lead up to as many as 25 points on two different occasions before settling for a 20-point win.

Burke led the way with 21 points on 5-of-8 shooting from long range and added four assists and five steals. Freshman Cherelle Simmons (Lancaster, PA/JP McCaskey) was the only other Bulldog to reach double figures with 10 points.

Senior Kim Rarick (Ringtown, PA/North Schuylkill) finished with nine points and dished out a team-high six assists and junior Caitlin Miller (Fogelsville, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) added seven points and seven rebounds in the win. Freshman Megan Bedard (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford) also played well of the bench with five points and four assists.

Courtney Young had a team-high 18 points for the Devils, while Meghan Lentine (11 boards) and Shealyn Taggart (10 rebounds) each had double figure rebounding totals in the loss.

The Bulldogs step away from Freedom Conference play and return to action on Monday, February 2nd when they host cross-town rival Muhlenberg College at 7:00 pm in Billera Hall. For those unable to attend you can follow online via LIVE Stats or LIVE Audio on Monday evening.
