Volleyball Wins 10th Straight; Mellon Passes Thomas on All-Time Kills List

Senior Jen Mellon moved into second place on the all-time kill list with 1,155 career kills on Saturday.

Center Valley, PA (October 10, 2009) – The DeSales University volleyball continued its roll winning its 10th straight match, sweeping a home tri-match with wins over Widener University (3-1) and Mid-Atlantic regional power Franklin & Marshall College (3-2) on Saturday afternoon in Billera Hall.

In the sweep senior Jen Mellon (Media, PA/Penncrest) moved into second place on the all-time kills list, passing current DeSales Hall of Famer, Barb Thomas '95. Mellon now has 1,155 career kills. DSU started the day with a 3-1 win (25-16, 19-25, 25-22, 25-12) over Widener University and followed that with a come-from-behind five-set win over Franklin & Marshall College by scores of 25-18, 13-25, 16-25, 25-19, 15-12. It was just the fifth loss of the season for the Diplomats.

In the win over Widener junior Kylie Fehnel (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) was sensational totaling 17 kills and just three errors in the win. She added 18 digs and four blocks to lead the Bulldogs. Mellon and sophomore Lauren Hickey (Ridley Park, PA/Ridley) each added nine kills, while senior Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) had 31 digs and freshman Justine McNulty (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) finished with four kills, 44 assists, and 11 digs. Sophomore Katie Dziuma (Bronx, NY/Preston) also played well with nine digs in two sets played.

In the comeback win over F&M, Mellon tallied a season-high 16 kills and hit .308 for the game, while Fehnel finished with 13 smashes and added 12 digs. Freshman Eden Reichard (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine) stepped in with nine kills, while Hickey and freshman Paige Horrigan (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) each had six kills. Horrigan added three blocks, Andrews finished with 25 digs, and McNulty tallied 45 assists and 13 digs. Dziuma had another solid match with three service aces and eight digs.

The Bulldogs will look to make it 11-straight wins on Wednesday, October 14th when they host FDU-Florham in a very important Freedom Conference match beginning at 7:00 pm in Billera Hall.
