Field Hockey Falls at Manhattanville, 3-1

Purchase, NY (October 21, 2009) – The DeSales University field hockey team gave up three goals over a five minutes stretch in the first half and was never able to recover falling to Manhattanville College, 3-1, in a Freedom Conference game on Wednesday evening.

The loss drops the Bulldogs to 6-10 overall and 0-4 in the Freedom, while the Valiants earn their first Freedom Conference win of the season and improve to 7-8 overall and 1-3 in the Freedom. MC had a 10-6 edge in shots, while DSU held an 8-6 advantage in penalty corners.

A scoreless game over the first 25 minutes of the game was broke over a span of five minutes and 10 seconds as the Valiants scored three times. The first goal came at the 25:59 mark on a marker from Jen Ascencio. Just 2:05 later, Kayla Meenan scored unassisted to make it 2-0 and Alyssa Coughlin got into the act just 3:05 after Meenan's goal to give MVille a 3-0 lead.

DSU pulled it within two goals at the 56:23 mark of the second half when sophomore Katie Martin (Bangor, PA/Bangor) scored her first goal of the game on a penalty stroke. Freshman Victoria DelToro (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) made five saves in the loss.

DSU returns to action on Saturday, October 24th when they travel to FDU-Florham for a Freedom Conference game beginning at 4:00 pm.
