Volleyball Sets New Consecutive Win Mark with 14th Straight Victory

Senior Jen Mellon was outstanding on Wednesday night with 14 kills in just 19 attempts in the win over King's College.

Center Valley, PA (October 28, 2009) – On a night when all three seniors were honored before the match, the seniors led the DeSales University volleyball team to a historic win as the Bulldogs won their 14th straight match, 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-10), over King's College in the Freedom Conference regular season finale on Wednesday evening in Billera Hall.

The Bulldogs, who earlier in the day moved up one spot to seventh in the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings, improve to 19-6 overall and 6-1 in the Freedom, while the Lady Monarchs fall to 18-11 overall and 3-4 in the Freedom. DSU clinches the #2 seed in the upcoming Freedom Conference playoffs as they will host the #3 seed, FDU-Florham, in the opening round on Wednesday, November 4th at 7:00 pm. The loss eliminated King's from playoff competition.

Senior Jen Mellon (Media, PA/Penncrest) had a tremendous night in her final regular season game in Billera Hall with 14 kills on just 19 hitting attempts for a .737 hitting percentage. Fellow senior Joann Rivera (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) added six kills and seven digs, while the final senior, Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) added a team-high 15 digs. Andrews moves to within eight digs of becoming the first-ever player in DeSales history to record 2,000 career digs.

Junior Kylie Fehnel (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) and freshman Paige Horrigan (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) were dominant at the net on Wednesday combining for 10 blocks with Fehnel registering three solo and two assist and Horrigan added one solo and four assist. Sophomore Lauren Hickey (Ridley Park, PA/Ridley) added six kills, Horrigan had five kills and freshman Justine McNulty (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) finished with 35 assists and two blocks. Freshman Eden Reichard (Martztown, PA/Brandywine) also played well with 10 digs in the win.

The Bulldogs will finish their regular season schedule this weekend when they travel to Richard Stockton College for a tri-match with Neumann College. DSU takes on Neumann at Noon and Richard Stockton at 2:00 pm.
