Center Valley, PA (November 17, 2009) – The 7th ranked DeSales University men's basketball team had no trouble in its 2009-10 season opener as the Bulldogs held visiting PSU-Berks to just 28.3 percent shooting and cruised to a 73-35 win over the Nittany Lions in a non-conference game on Tuesday evening in Billera Hall.
DSU (1-0 overall) jumped out to a 20-4 lead over the first 10 minutes of the game and eventually led by as many as 25-points in the opening half before holding a 38-17 halftime cushion. The second half was more of the same as the Bulldog defense refused to let PSU-Berks (0-2 overall) get anything going on the offensive end as the lead grew to as many as 39 points before the final buzzer sounded on a 38-point win for the Bulldogs.
DeSales dominated the glass, out-rebounding PSU-Berks, 46-32, the Bulldogs forced 20 Nittany Lion turnovers and committed just seven themselves, and DSU shot 44.1 percent from the floor as compared to just 28.3 percent for the visitors. The win is the 13th straight at home dating back to last season and the fifth straight over PSU-Berks in the all-time series.
Leading the way was a trio of seniors including All-American Darnell Braswell (Allentown, PA/William Allen) with a game-high 16 points, to go along with three assists and five rebounds. Fellow seniors Rob Schubach (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) and Jim Malatesta (Warminster, PA/Archbishop Wood) chipped in with 13 and 12 points respectively, while junior Nicholas Rossignoli (Reading, PA/Reading Central Catholic) played well off the bench with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting.
Senior Charles Princiotto (Woodcliff Lake, NJ/Pascack Hills) and junior Brian Hunter (Allentown, PA/Emmaus) combined for 10 assists, five each, from the point guard spot as 11 different players got into the scoring column in the win.
DSU returns to action on Friday night when they travel to the Albright College Tip-Off Tournament to take on The College of New Jersey in the first round with tip set for 6:00 pm.
