Doylestown, PA (December 5, 2009) – Senior Darnell Braswell (Allentown, PA/William Allen) got to the rim with 26 seconds left with a finger roll finish giving the DeSales University men's basketball team a 74-73 lead and eventually the win over Delaware Valley College in Freedom Conference action on a snowy Saturday afternoon in the Mid-Atlantic Region.
The 24th ranked Bulldogs improve to 5-2 overall and more importantly 2-0 in the Freedom Conference, while the Aggies fall to 3-3 overall and 1-1 in the Freedom. DSU had its second straight strong shooting outing, canning 57.1 percent of its attempts, 62.5 percent in the second half, while out-rebounding DVC, 32-30.
This game, as it usually does in James Work Gymnasium, came right down to the wire. With the game tied at 61, James Jones made good on a three-pointer at the top of the key, one that banked home, but Braswell answered with four straight free throws over the next two possessions to push DSU on top by one, 65-64, with 3:30 to go.
Jon Evans made good on a jumper pushing DVC back in front but a long three-pointer from sophomore Bob Zanneo (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) gave the visitor's a 68-66 lead with 2:51 to go. The host's would not go away and two free throws from Jason Goldheimer tied the game for the 10th time at 68, with 2:27 left.
Enter senior Matt Zwetolitz (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall).
After an offensive rebound from Zanneo, Zwetoltiz was the recipient of some excellent ball movement as he got the ball in the left corner, drove the wide open lane and finished his contested lay-up giving DSU a two-point lead. Jones drove the lane on the next possession, slipped in the paint, but was able to kick it out to Goldheimer who canned an open three, but Zwetolitz once again answered the challenge as he got the ball in the post and finished a short turn-around jumper to give DeSales a 72-71 lead with 52 ticks left.
Jones was fouled on his next drive and knocked down both freebies and DeSales pushed the ball up court calling timeout with 30 seconds left. From there Braswell went to work, receiving the inbounds pass, driving to the hole for a game-winning finger roll, then forced Jones into a pull-up jumper just above the free throw line that hit the back iron on the defensive end and freshman Brett Moyer (Souderton, PA/Christopher Dock) grabbed the rebound as Zwetolitz was fouled with 1.4 seconds left.
Zwetolitz knocked down the first and missed the second purposefully as a full-court heave was well off the mark giving DeSales the road victory.
Braswell finished with 20 points and pulled down a team-high seven rebounds in the win. Sophomore Jamey Bercier (Stroudsburg, PA/Notre Dame) had a career-high 14 points on a perfect 6-for-6 afternoon from the floor and junior Brian Hunter (Allentown, PA/Emmaus) continued his steady play with 11 points.
Zwetolitz finished with seven points and four assists to go along with no turnovers, while Malatesta added six points, four assists, and six rebounds. Senior Rob Schubach (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) and Zanneo came off the bench to score 14 points on 4-of-7 shooting from downtown.
Evans finished with a team-high 15 points for the Aggies, while Goldheimer had 14 points and Carroll Mitchell finished with 11 points, all in the first half.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Wednesday, December 9th when they travel down to Catholic University for a non-conference game beginning at 7:00 pm.
