#23 DeSales Rolls past Eastern; Clinches Top Seed in Freedom Playoffs

St. David's, PA (February 14, 2009) – #23 DeSales University jumped out to a 45-15 lead over the first 15 minutes of the game and never looked back in a convincing 86-47 win over Eastern University in a Freedom Conference game on Saturday afternoon.

The win improves the Bulldogs to 19-4 overall and 13-1 in the Freedom Conference, while the Eagles drop to 6-17 overall and 2-13 in the Freedom. DeSales clinches the #1 seed in the Freedom Conference playoffs with two games left to play in the regular season.

DSU was on fire to start the game shooting close to 65% over the first 15 minutes of the contest in opening its 30-point lead. A three-pointer from senior LeighAnn Burke (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Ryan) at the 5:35 mark of the first half made the score 45-15 and the Bulldogs rolled from there.

DeSales finished the game shooting 46.8 percent and enjoying a 54-38 advantage on the glass. Both teams turned the ball over 18 times and the Eagles shot just 24.3 percent from the field in the game.

Several players contributed in the win including Burke with a team-high 12 points and four steals in just 16 minutes. Fellow senior Kim Rarick (Ringtown, PA/North Schuylkill) added a team-high 14 points and dished out six assists. Junior Elyse Kutsop (Lansdale, PA/North Penn) finished with a career-high 11 points off the bench to round out the double figure scoring.

Four players finished with eight points including junior Caitlin Miller (Fogelsville, PA/Northwestern Lehigh), sophomore Shaina Dymond (Shickshinny, PA/Northwest), junior Kelly Magrann (Sinking Spring, PA/Holy Name), and freshman Megan Bedard (Limerick, PA/Spring-Ford). Senior Erica Sovak (Tuxedo, NY/George F. Baker) grabbed a team-high eight boards, freshman Cherelle Simmons (Lancaster, PA/JP McCaskey) had a game-high five steals, and Dymond added seven rebounds and four blocks to her eight points.

Freshman Bekah Roland finished with a game-high 15 points and junior Hannah Tobin totaled 14 points in the loss.

The Bulldogs return to action and home on Tuesday, February 17th when they host Delaware Valley College in the final regular season home game for the Bulldogs beginning at 6:00 pm. You can follow the game's progress via LIVE stats or LIVE audio if you are unable to attend.
