Center Valley, PA (February 17, 2009) – The DeSales University men's basketball team struggled to find the scoring touch all last week but what a difference a week makes as the Bulldogs put 84 points on the board in a much needed 84-71 Freedom Conference win over Delaware Valley College on Tuesday evening in Billera Hall.

The win moves DSU (19-5, 11-4 Freedom) one step closer to clinching the #1 seed in next week's Freedom Conference playoffs as they finish the season at Alvernia University on Saturday afternoon. The Aggies, who fall to 11-12 overall and 7-8 in the Freedom, got some good news following the game as a Misericordia and Alvernia loss on Tuesday saw them clinch the fifth and final playoff spot setting the field for next week.

Tuesday's game saw DeSales start quickly opening up an 11-4 lead only to see the Aggies chip away and eventually tie the game at 22 on back-to-back three-pointers from Jason Goldheimer and Jon Evans. DSU answered the two triples with a 10-0 run however, opening up a 32-22 lead with senior Ed Lapinski (Red Hill, PA/Upper Perkiomen) doing most of the damage scoring six of the 10 points.

The lead grew to as many as 12 points before the Bulldogs settled for a 10-point cushion entering the locker room. DeSales shot 48.1 percent in the opening half and went 4-for-8 from three-point land. Delaware Valley shot 41.7 percent in the first twenty minutes.

The second half was pretty much all DeSales as they kept pace with any run the Aggies mounted. The lead grew to as many as 19 points (59-40) early in the half before DVC cut it to nine points with seven quick points on back-to-back possessions at the 6:43 mark.

The Bulldogs answered that spurt with four straight points and a three-pointer from senior Matt Zwetolitz (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) pushed the lead back up to 15 points (74-59) with 3:33 to go and DeSales never looked back. The hosts finished the game shooting 48.2 percent from the field and enjoyed a healthy 40-27 advantage on the glass.

Leading the way for DeSales was junior Darnell Braswell (Allentown, PA/William Allen) recording his fourth double-double of the season with 22 points and a career-best 13 rebounds. Lapinski was just one rebound shy of a double-double finishing with 19 points and nine rebounds and became the 21st player in DeSales University men's basketball history to score 1,000 career points with a lay-up at the 12:20 mark of the second half.

Junior Jim Malatesta (Warminster, PA/Archbishop Wood) had 11 points, while junior Brian Hunter (Allentown, PA/Emmaus) and Zwetolitz each reached double figures off the bench with 13 and 10 points respectively.

Delaware Valley also saw five players reach double digits as James Jones tallied 14 points, Jon Evans had 13 points, Chris Mayo and Mike Williams each had 12 points and Jason Seipt finished with 10 points and seven assists.

DeSales concludes the Freedom Conference regular season on Saturday when they travel to Alvernia University with tip-off set for 3:00 pm.
