Men’s Lacrosse Opens MAC Season with 8-6 Win over King’s

Wilkes-Barre, PA (March 14, 2009) – The DeSales University men's lacrosse team got off to an excellent start in its MAC conference schedule with an 8-6 win over rival King's College on Saturday afternoon in Wilkes-Barre, PA.

The Bulldogs opened up a 4-1 lead after trailing 1-0 and never looked back in the win. DSU is now 1-3 overall and 1-0 in the MAC, while the Monarchs fall to 1-3 overall and 0-1 in the MAC.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs was freshman Michael Bassani (Califon, NY/Voorhees) and senior Andrew Ervin (Langhorne, PA/Langhorne) with two goals each. Junior Kevin Walker (Wilmington, DE/Salesianum), freshman Jeff Cook (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore), senior Matthew Brancaccio (Greenvale, NY/North Shore), and junior Matthew Kurszewski (Atco, NJ/Winslow Township) also scored goals in the win.

Cook (two) and Brancaccio had assists for the Bulldogs. Junior Jarryd Stamatelos (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) had five saves in between the pipes, Walker won 9-of-14 face-offs and had six ground balls, while senior Jimmy Hirsch (Putnam Valley, NY/Putnam Valley) led the way with seven ground balls for the Bulldogs.

DSU returns to action on Wednesday, March 18th when they host local rival Moravian College in a non-conference game beginning at 4:00 pm.
