Center Valley, PA (March 28, 2009) – Freshman Jack Kavetski (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) and senior Chris Brian (Oak Ridge, NJ/Jefferson Township) each turned in terrific pitching performances leading the DeSales University baseball team to a Freedom Conference doubleheader sweep of Misericordia University on Saturday afternoon at Butz Field.

The Bulldogs are now 11-8 overall and 3-1 in the Freedom, while the Cougars fall to 11-11 overall and 0-4 in the Freedom. DSU shook of a rough top of the first inning, allowing three runs, to hold Misericordia to just two more runs over the ensuing 17 innings to earn the sweep.

In the first game, Kateski relieved sophomore Mike Newland (Frenchtown, NJ/Delaware Valley) just six batters into the game and promptly got out of a bases loaded no out jam with a double play and fly out and proceeded to pitch 7.2 innings of scoreless relief allowing just four hits to earn his second win of the season.

The Bulldogs offense picked up the slack scoring twice in the bottom of the inning to pull within one on doubles from Newland and senior Zac Hess (Harleysville, PA/LaSalle). The Bulldogs took the lead for good in the third inning when Hess scored on an RBI groundout from senior Greg Treat (Concord, NH/Concord) and an RBI double from junior Andrew Feher (Riegelsville, PA/Palisades).

DSU led 6-3 entering the bottom of the seventh inning when the Bulldogs blew the game open with five runs including a two-RBI double from senior Mike Bianca (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) and a two-RBI single from Treat.

Junior Derek Moyer (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) had three hits, two RBI's and four runs scored, Hess scored three times, Bianca finished with three hits, two runs, and two RBI's and Treat knocked in four runs in the game one win.

In the second game, Brian was up to the challenge on the mound as he turned his best performance of the season lasting 7.1 innings allowing just three hits and two runs, while striking out seven and walking just three for his second win of the year.

Tied at two entering the bottom of the seventh inning, junior Doc Neiman (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) delivered an RBI single plating Treat who had doubled to give DSU the lead for good. Neiman came around to score on an RBI double from senior Nick Repas (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) and DSU added four more insurance runs in the eighth to provide the final tally.

Bianca, Treat, Neiman and Repas each had two hits in the game two win. Repas knocked in three runs, Feher pushed two tallies across home plate and Neiman scored three times to lead the offensive attack.

The Bulldogs will take a day off on Sunday and are scheduled to return to action on Monday when they host The University of Scranton in a non-conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
