Hess’ Walk-Off HR/Moyer’s Five Hits lead DSU past Montclair State

Junior Derek Moyer went 5-for-5 with four RBI's and hit his fourth home run of the season in the win over Montclair State.
BOX SCORE

Center Valley, PA (March 31, 2009) – Senior Zac Hess (Harleysville, PA/LaSalle) hit a three-run walk-off home run and junior Derek Moyer (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) had five hits and four RBI's leading the DeSales University baseball team past Montclair State University, 10-9, in non-conference action on Tuesday afternoon.

The Bulldogs have now won three straight and improve to 12-8 overall, while the Red Hawks fall to 7-9 overall. Hess' homer was his second of the season, clearing the right-center field fence plating senior Nick Repas (Abingdon, MD/Bel Air) and freshman Jack Kavetski (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) who had pinch-run for Moyer after he recorded his fifth hit of the game with one out.

Sophomore Travis Hughes (Levittown, PA/Conwell-Egan Catholic) earned his second win of the season, pitching one scoreless inning, striking out two. Senior James Niesuchouski (Chester, VT/St. Dominic) and sophomore Alex Brown (Nazareth, PA/Notre Dame) combined with Hughes to blank the Red Hawks over the final 3.1 innings allowing just three hits in that time.

DSU scored early and often opening up a 6-3 lead after three innings with two runs in the first, three runs in the second inning, and a solo run in the third. Moyer plated the first two runs in the opening inning with a base hit, Repas knocked in one run in the second, junior Andrew Feher (Riegelsville, PA/Palisades) scored on a wild pitch and Moyer drove in another run to finish off the three-run second and the Bulldogs took advantage of an MSU error in the third to push across one tally.

After Montclair took a 9-6 lead with five runs in the top of the fifth inning, Moyer made it a 9-7 game with a solo homer, his fourth of the year to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning. The score stayed that way until the bottom of the ninth when Repas singled, moved to second on a ground out, and advanced to third on Moyer's fifth hit of the game. Hess came to the plate and blasted a pitched high into the air and over the right-center field fence ending the game in walk-off fashion.

DeSales returns to action on Wednesday, April 1st when they travel to FDU-Florham for a Freedom Conference game beginning at 3:30 pm.
