BOX SCORE

Purchase, NY (April 24, 2009) – The DeSales University baseball team fell behind early and was never able to recover as Manhattanville College took the first game of the home and home series this weekend with a 15-10 win on Friday afternoon at Manhattanville field.

The loss drops the Bulldogs to 19-14-1 overall and 8-7 in the Freedom, while the Valiants improve to 20-15 overall and 8-5 in the Freedom. DSU has one game remaining on Sunday in the Freedom Conference when they host this same Manhattanville team beginning at Noon at Butz Field. With eight games being played on Saturday, several playoff scenarios still exist, but it is likely DSU will need a win on Sunday to keep their playoff hopes alive.

On Friday, the Valiants took an early 4-0 lead with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. DSU scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to cut the margin down to two runs on a solo home run from sophomore Mike Newland (Frenchtown, NJ/Delaware Valley) and an RBI bases loaded walk from Newland.

Manhattanville broke the game open however with three more runs to lead 7-2 after the fourth and scored six more runs in the fifth to take a 13-3 lead. DSU scored five times in the seventh on the strength of a three-run home run from junior Andrew Feher (Riegelsville, PA/Palisades) but it was not enough as the Bulldogs ultimately fell by five runs.

Junior Mark Reilly (Cream Ridge, NJ/Notre Dame) took the loss allowing seven runs over 3.1 innings, walking three. Newland was the lone bright spot in the DSU lineup as he finished the game 3-for-4 with two home runs, three RBI's and two runs scored.

DSU does not return to action until Sunday when they host the Valiants in the final Freedom Conference game of the season for both teams. First pitch is set for Noon and for those unable to attend you can follow the game's progress via LIVE Stats. DeSales also travels to Coca-Cola Park later that day to take on local rival Muhlenberg College in a non-conference game beginning at 5:00 pm.
