Baseball Falls to Mahattanville; Rebounds with Win over Muhlenberg

Center Valley, PA (April 26, 2009) – The DeSales University baseball team played two games on Sunday, dropping the Freedom Conference regular season finale, 15-13 to Manhattanville College during the afternoon at Butz Field, before rebounding with a 9-7 extra inning win over local rival Muhlenberg College in the nightcap at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, PA.

With the split, DSU (who misses the Freedom Conference playoffs for the first time since the 1999 season) moves to 20-15-1 overall and records its 10th straight 20th win season. The Bulldogs finish sixth in the Freedom Conference with the top five making the Freedom post-season.

In the day's opener, the Bulldogs opened up a 4-0 lead and led 7-3 after five innings before the Valiants scored four times in the sixth, eighth, and ninth innings to record a come-from-behind 15-13 win. DeSales' pounded out 18 hits but made five errors leading to three unearned runs for Manhattanville in the loss.

Senior Greg Treat (Concord, NH/Concord) went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, sophomore Mike Newland (Frenchtown, NJ/Delaware Valley) had two hits including a home run, scored twice and knocked in three, and senior Zac Hess (Harleysville, PA/LaSalle) totaled three hits and scored twice.

Freshman Jason Hadinger (Northampton, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) gave DSU a 3-0 lead with a three-run homer in the first inning and finished with two hits and two runs, junior Derek Moyer (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) had three hits, junior Andrew Feher (Riegelsville, PA/Palisades) had three hits and three RBI's and junior Michael Jordan (Green Lane, PA/Souderton) finished with two hits in the game one loss.

In the nightcap, Muhlenberg scored once in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game at seven before DSU scored twice in the top of the 10th to record the 9-7 win. Senior Andrew Kulhamer (Whitehall, PA/Whitehall) had a terrific finish to his career, tossing five brilliant innings allowing just four hits and one run while striking out five in the no-decision.

Offensively, DSU had 16 more hits as Newland collected two more, sophomore Carson Slonaker (East Greenville, PA/Perkiomen School) went 3-for-5 with two runs and two RBI's, Hess had three hits including a two-run homer in the first inning, Moyer slashed two hits and junior Doc Neiman (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) had two hits.

DSU will conclude its season with two non-conference games this week starting tomorrow when they host York College (PA) at Butz Field beginning at 3:30 pm and traveling to its other local rival Moravian College on Wednesday at 4:00 pm.
