Wilkes-Barre, PA (April 5, 2009) – The DeSales University baseball team suffered a sweep in a Freedom Conference doubleheader falling to Wilkes University in both games on Sunday afternoon in Artillery Park.

The sweep drops DSU to 13-11 overall and 3-4 in the Freedom, while the Colonels improve to 17-5 overall and 4-1 in the Freedom Conference. After taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the second inning in the first game, the wheels fell off for the Bulldogs as the Colonels scored two runs in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead, one more in the fourth and three runs in the fifth to go ahead 6-1. The Bulldogs put two runs on the board and had the tying run in the on-deck circle with two outs in the ninth but were unable to get him to the plate.

In the second game the Colonels dominated from the very first pitch scoring in each of the first six innings, including a big five-run fourth inning that staked WU to a 12-1 lead as Wilkes never looked back in a 14-8 game two win.

In the first game, senior James Niesuchouski (Chester, VT/St. Dominic) took the loss going five innings allowing just nine hits and six runs. Junior Mark Reilly (Cream Ridge, NJ/Notre Dame) did pitch well in relief going three innings allowing just three hits and striking out five. Junior Derek Moyer (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) continued his hot hitting with three hits and senior Mike Bianca (Ellicott City, MD/Mt. St. Joseph) had two hits and two runs scored.

In the second game, DSU gave up five unearned runs over the first two innings and never got anything going until it trailed 13-1 entering the sixth inning when it plated three runs and added another three tallies in the eighth. Moyer was another bright spot going 2-for-5 with two runs and two RBI's and sophomore Carson Slonaker (East Greenville, PA/Perkiomen School) went 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI's. Freshman Jack Kavetski (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) also had two hits and knocked in one run.

DeSales does not get much time to think about these two losses as it is scheduled to play nine games over the next 10 days including a non-conference game at Rutgers-Newark on Monday afternoon beginning at 3:30 pm.
