Bulldogs Open Season Strong, Top Local Rival Muhlenberg, 3-0

Center Valley, PA, (September 1, 2009) – Three Bulldogs combined for 26 kills as the DeSales University volleyball team had an impressive start to the 2009 season with a 3-0 (25-19, 25-21, 25-17) win over local rival Muhlenberg College in Billera Hall on Tuesday evening.

DeSales started strong, shaking off a timid start to the first set to come from behind and take the opener 25-19. DSU led the entire way in the second set and after falling behind early in the third set, took control and cruised to the three-set win. The Bulldogs hit .162 for the game and played terrific defense, tallying 62 digs and totaling five team blocks.

Leading the offensive attack was junior Kylie Fehnel (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) with 11 kills, eight digs and two blocks. Sophomore Lauren Hickey (Ridley Park, PA/Ridley) was outstanding off the bench with eight kills on just 18 attempts, and senior Joann Rivera (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) totaled seven kills.

Freshman setter Justine McNulty (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) had a tremendous college debut with 30 assists and 10 digs, distributing the ball all over the court. Senior Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) finished with a match-high 18 digs, freshman Eden Reichard (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine) totaled 10 digs, and junior Alyssa Poplaski (Mechanicsburg, PA/Mechanicsburg) finished with eight digs.

Senior Jen Mellon (Media, PA/Penncrest) and freshman Paige Horrigan (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) each had strong matches at the net with Mellon totaling four blocks and Horrigan sending back three balls. Freshman Morgan Hart (Lancaster, PA/Manheim Township) also played well totaling four kills in just four attempts in one set played.

DSU returns to action this weekend when they travel to the Johns Hopkins University Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
