Bulldogs Post 2-2 Mark at Muhlenberg Tournament; Andrews Named All-Tournament

Senior Kerri Andrews had 66 digs over four matches to earn All-Tournament honors this weekend.

Allentown, PA, (September 12, 2009) – The DeSales University volleyball team had a solid showing at the Muhlenberg College Tournament over the weekend posting a 2-2 record that included wins over local rival Moravian College and Freedom Conference foe FDU-Florham.

The Bulldogs opened play on Friday with a 3-1 loss to M.I.T (13-25, 18-25, 25-18, 15-25) and a 3-0 loss to nationally ranked Haverford College (15-25, 18-25, 23-25). In the loss to MIT, sophomore Lauren Hickey (Ridley Park, PA/Ridley) led the way with eight kills and senior Kerri Andrews (Bethlehem, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) totaled a team-high 15 digs. Seniors Joann Rivera (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) and Jen Mellon (Media, PA/Penncrest) each had six kills, and junior Kylie Fehnel (Nazareth, PA/Bethlehem Catholic) added six kills and three blocks.

In the loss to Haverford, Rivera and Mellon each had eight kills, while Fehnel and Hickey added six kills. Andrews had 15 more digs and freshman Justine McNulty (Collegeville, PA/Methacton) totaled 24 assists and nine digs.

On Saturday, DSU played extremely well with 3-0 wins over both Moravian (25-15. 25-12, 25-12) and FDU-Florham (25-20, 25-16, 25-16). In the match with Moravian, Rivera led the way with seven kills, Mellon had five kills on just 10 attack attempts, and Fehnel totaled a team-high seven total blocks. Andrews finished with 16 digs and McNulty had 25 assists. Freshman Paige Horrigan (Mohnton, PA/Governor Mifflin) added three blocks in the win.

In the final match of the weekend, Fehnel exploded for 11 kills, eight digs, and three blocks, and Hickey finished with 10 kills. Andrews, who earned All-Tournament honors, finished with 20 digs, McNulty had 24 assists and 10 digs, Horrigan blocked three more balls, and freshman Eden Reichard (Mertztown, PA/Brandywine) had 12 digs in the win.

The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday, September 16th when they begin Freedom Conference play with a rematch of last year's Freedom Conference Championship match at Eastern University beginning at 7:00 pm.
