Women’s Tennis Opens Conference Season with 8-1 Win over FDU-Florham

Sophomore Krista Damirgian earned a hard-fought three-set singles win over FDU-Florham on Monday.

Madison, NJ (September 21, 2009) – The DeSales University women's tennis team opened its Freedom Conference schedule on Monday afternoon with a convincing 8-1 win over FDU-Florham on the road.

DSU took all three doubles matches and all but one singles match in the win. The win improves DSU to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the Freedom, while the Devils fall to 1-4 overall and 0-2 in the Freedom.

In the doubles matches, junior Kate Steiner (Walnutport, PA/Northampton) teamed with sophomore Christine Petrilla (Hamilton, NJ/Steinert-Hamilton East) to win 8-0 at the No. 1 spot. Sophomore Krista Damirgian (Cherry Hill, NJ/Cherry Hill West) was paired with freshman Ariane Cain (Reading, PA/Exeter Township) at the No. 2 spot to win, 8-2, and junior Amelia Lloyd (Sinking Spring, PA/Wilson) joined fellow junior Yllka Cana (Allentown, PA/William Allen) to win 8-2 at the No. 3 spot.

In the singles matches, Steiner won 6-1, 6-0 at the No. 1 spot, Petrilla earned a 6-2, 6-0 win at the No. 2 spot, and Damirgian won a hard-fought three-set match, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot. Lloyd was also a winner at the No. 5 spot, 8-4, and Cana earned an 8-2 win at the No. 6 position.

The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow when they host local rival Moravian College beginning at 4:00 pm.
