Madison, NJ (January 16, 2009) – Senior Kelly Magrann (Sinking Spring, PA/Holy Name) came off the bench to pour in a career-high 21 points and the DeSales University women's basketball team forced 30 FDU-Florham turnovers en route to a 75-53 win over the Devils in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon at the Ferguson Recreation Center.
The Bulldogs (6-8, 2-3 Freedom) dominated the defensive end of the ball all afternoon, using a full court press that frustrated the Devils (7-8, 2-3 Freedom) all game long. DeSales scored 34 of its 75 points off the 30 FDU turnovers and shot a very impressive 44.4 percent from the field in the opening half when it built a 16-point halftime lead.
The Devils started strong jumping out to a 9-4 lead before the Bulldogs settled down and chipped away at the lead, taking its first lead, 16-14, on a three-pointer from Magrann at the 12:02 mark. FDU tied the game on its next possession on a jumper from Shealyn Taggart and DeSales took control from that point using an 18-0 run over the next six minutes to take a 34-16 lead. During the spurt five different players scored led by Magrann with 10 points.
Florham came out with some energy to open the second half, whittling the DSU advantage down to 10 points a couple of times with the last coming at the 11:57 mark, but another three-pointer from Magrann and a jumper from freshman Colleen Gavin (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) pushed the lead up to 15 points and the Bulldogs cruised from there.
Magrann tallied her career-high on 7-of-11 shooting, 5-of-7 from three-point land, while junior Lori Lidlow (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) added a season-high 27 points on 10-of-22 shooting and pulled down a team-best seven rebounds.
Sophomore Hannah Smith (New Cumberland, PA/Cedar Cliff) had a terrific floor game with nine assists to just two turnovers and five steals. Gavin totaled 14 points, six rebounds, and five steals in the win.
Taggart had 21 points for the Devils and senior Danielle Michlovsky registered a double-double with 13 points and 10 rebounds in the loss.
The Bulldogs return to action on Monday when they travel cross-town to take on nationally ranked Muhlenberg College in a non-conference game beginning at 7:30 pm.
