Center Valley, PA (January 23, 2010) – The DeSales University women's basketball team continued its resurgent play using a dominating 30-2 run just over a 10-minute span in the first half en route to a 32-point halftime lead and an eventual 72-44 win over King's College in Freedom Conference action on Saturday afternoon in Billera Hall.
The win moves DeSales to 8-9 overall but more importantly improves the Bulldogs to 4-3 in the Freedom Conference standings as the first half of the conference schedule comes to a close. King's falls to 9-9 overall and 4-3 in the Freedom with the loss.
The story of this game was the first half. A half in which the Bulldogs could do no wrong and the Lady Monarchs could do no right. A 6-5 DeSales lead at the 16:53 mark quickly went to a 29-point lead at the 6:15 mark (36-7) as the Bulldogs went on an impressive 30-2 run over that time frame to blow this game wide open.
During the run, it was the Bulldogs defense that was the key as it held KC to just one field goal and forced 10 turnovers. DeSales capitalized on the offensive end hitting 13-of-18 (72.2 percent) shots from the field to pull away. Junior Lori Lidlow (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) led the way with 16 of the 30 points and senior Kelly Magrann (Sinking Spring, PA/Holy Name) hit two three's during the spurt.
The lead peaked at 35 points early in the second half and the Lady Monarchs never got any closer than 25 points. DSU finished the game shooting 44.3 percent and held King's to just 27.1 percent shooting. The Bulldogs forced 26 Lady Monarch turnovers and out-rebounded KC, 43-40.
Lidlow finished with a game-high 26 points on an impressive 11-of-15 shooting afternoon. Magrann totaled 14 points and junior Megan Montchyk (Bellmawr, NJ/Paul VI) had her third straight game in double figures with 11 points. Sophomore Cherelle Simmons (Lancaster, PA/JP McCaskey) finished with nine points and nine rebounds, while freshman Colleen Gavin (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) grabbed a game-high 13 boards and scored six points. Sophomore Hannah Smith (New Cumberland, PA/Cedar Cliff) did another great job at the point with nine assists and just two turnovers.
Paige Carlin was the lone double digit scorer for King's with 17 points. Megan Rigous added nine points off the bench.
DeSales gets a well deserved few days off before returning to action on Wednesday, January 27th when they travel to Albright College for their final non-conference game of the season beginning at 7:00 pm.
