Defense Dominates as Bulldogs Win Fourth Straight, 64-41, at Eastern

St. David's, PA (January 30, 2010) – The DeSales University women's basketball team forced 31 turnovers and held Eastern University to just 29.2 percent shooting as the Bulldogs recorded their fourth straight win, 64-41, in Freedom Conference action on a snowy Saturday afternoon in the Philadelphia area.

DeSales earns its 10th win of the season, improving to 10-9 overall and 5-3 in the Freedom Conference, while Eastern falls to 5-12 overall and 0-8 in the Freedom. The Bulldogs shook off a rough shooting first half (26.5 percent), shooting 41.9 percent in the second half where it led by as many as 27 points.

Up three points (16-13) mid-way thru the second DeSales used a 12-4 run over the final 10 minutes of the half to take an 11-point lead into the locker room. Senior Kelly Magrann (Sinking Spring, PA/Holy Name) led the charge with a team-high eight points as seven different Bulldogs reached the scoring column.

DSU cruised in the second half pushing its lead up to 20 early in the half before its lead peaked at 27 points, 57-30, on a three-pointer from senior Kaila Wiand (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) at the 5:01 mark.

Magrann finished with 15 points and three steals, while junior Lori Lidlow (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) also reached double figures with 11 points and added four steals. Sophomore Cherelle Simmons (Lancaster, PA/JP McCaskey) totaled seven points, five steals, and three blocks, while junior Shaina Dymond (Shickshinny, PA/Northwest) also had seven points and pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.

Freshman Colleen Gavin (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) came off the bench to score eight points and pull down six rebounds, while sophomore Hannah Smith (New Cumberland, PA/Cedar Cliff) dished out seven assists and had just one turnover in the win.

Bekah Roland was the lone Eagle in double digits with 17 points. Sam Weaver had five points and grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds in the loss.

The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday evening when they travel to Manhattanville College for another Freedom Conference game beginning at 6:00 pm.
