Center Valley, PA (January 6, 2010) – The DeSales University women's basketball team used a strong defensive first-half to build a three-point halftime lead (31-28) but Cabrini College out-scored the Bulldogs, 45-24, in the second half to pull away with a 73-55 win in a non-conference game in Billera Hall on Wednesday evening.
The Bulldogs fall to 4-7 overall on the year, while the Cavaliers even their record to 5-5 overall. DSU shot the ball much better, converting 35.0 percent for the game and was 7-for-16 (43.8 percent) from three-point land but the defensive end hurt the Bulldogs, particularly in the second half when Cabrini scored 45 points, shot 44.78 percent from the field, was 6-for-13 (46.2 percent) from three-point land and DSU forced just four Cavalier turnovers.
DSU started the game very strong, opening up a 16-9 lead on a jumper from senior Kelly Magrann (Sinking Spring, PA/Holy Name), her seventh and eighth points of the night. Cabrini then used an 8-0 run to take a 17-16 advantage before a trey from senior Kaila Wiand (Royersford, PA/Spring-Ford) gave DSU the lead back, 19-17, at the 7:12 mark.
The first-half was back-and-forth the rest of the way with two ties and two more lead changes over the final six minutes. The Bulldogs closed the half with consecutive lay-ups from senior Caitlin Miller (Fogelsville, PA/Northwestern Lehigh) and sophomore Cherelle Simmons (Lancaster, PA/JP McCaskey) to give DeSales its 31-28 halftime advantage.
The second half was more of the same at the start. Cabrini took a one-point lead (42-41) at the 14: 14 but freshman Taylor Greene (Blairstown, NJ/North Warren) hit a driving lay-up that gave DSU the lead right back. The Cavaliers however then took control using a 9-0 run over the next 2:15 to go up eight points, 51-43, with 11:42 left.
DeSales chipped away and when freshman Colleen Gavin (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) hit a lay-up off a nice feed from Magrann at the 9:31 mark, the Bulldogs were within four, 53-49, with 9:31 left but Cabrini scored the next 11 points to take a 15-point lead (64-49) at the 4:23 mark and the Cavs cruised the rest of the way.
Magrann led the way for DeSales with 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including four three-pointers. Wiand added 12 points and Miller finished with seven points and 11 rebounds. Greene finished with nine points and had two steals.
Four players reached double figures for the Cavaliers including Alyssa Brady with 18 points. Brady added six rebounds, six assists, and five steals in the win. Kate Walck had 17 points and nine rebounds, Kara Hinkelmon totaled 16 points and eight boards, and Deana DiAmico finished with 15 points and five assists.
