BOX SCORE

Center Valley, PA (October 16, 2010) – Freshman Sam Lavin (Phillipsburg, NJ/Phillipsburg) had one goal and one assist leading the DeSales University field hockey team past Wilkes University for the first time in school history with a 2-1 win over the Colonels on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (6-8, 1-3 Freedom), having scored no goals over the last three games at home, found themselves down 1-0 at the half after Wilkes (4-7, 0-4 Freedom) took the one-goal lead with a tally at the 17:42 mark. The second half, however, was all DeSales as they out-shot Wilkes, 20-3, and held a 9-3 advantage in corners in the second half, scoring twice to earn the win.

Lavin got the Bulldogs on the board just 2:36 into the second half when she took a loose ball in the box on a rebound and pushed home her second goal of the season. That sigh of relief goal gave DeSales some energy as they dominated play over the final 33+ minutes peppering the Colonal cage.

Finally at the 50:45 mark Lavin dribbled around a charging goalkeeper on a breakaway and found senior Amy Pulcini (Easton, PA/Easton) in front of the goal with a centering pass as Pulcini knocked home the ball for her eighth goal of the year and a 2-1 DSU lead that stood up as the final tally.

DSU finished the game out-shooting Wilkes, 30-11, and out-cornering the Colonels, 15-10. Sophomore Victoria DelToro (Bethlehem, PA/Liberty) made six saves, while her counterpart Lindsey Davenport was outstanding with 16 stops in the loss.

DeSales returns to action on Monday, October 18th when they travel to Marywood University for a non-conference game beginning at 7:00 pm.
