BOX SCORE
Center Valley, PA (October 2, 2010) – In a wild game that saw six goals scored in the span of just over 10 minutes in the second half neither team could find the back of the net over the final 52 minutes of game time as the DeSales University women's soccer team settled for a 4-4 double overtime tie with Manhattanville College in the Freedom Conference opener for both teams.
Manhattanville (0-9-1, 0-0-1 Freedom) enjoyed a 26-14 edge in shots, while the Bulldogs (5-5-1, 0-0-1 Freedom) had a 7-6 advantage in corner kicks in the game. The opening half saw freshman
Brady Walsh (Leesport, PA/Schuylkill Valley) get DSU on the board taking a pass to the back post from fellow freshman
Meghan Monroy (Torrington, CT/Torrington) and firing a shot inside the keeper's leg on the near post for her ninth goal of the year.
MVille wasted no time tying the game as
Holly Nonis scored her first of three goals off an assist from
Regina Hayes when she volleyed home a pass that was not cleared in the middle of the box by the DeSales' defense. Neither team was able to score over the final 30 minutes of the first half as both teams took a breather with the score tied at one.
The first 12+ minutes of the second half were wild. Just 1:32 into the half Monroy scored touching home a centering feed from Walsh that was whiffed on by both the Valiant keeper and defense and went right to Monroy who touched it into a wide open net. That lead was short lived as Honis scored again just 2:38 later taking a pass thru the defense and touching a shot past the GK on the left side.
The wild stretch continued as Walsh tallied her second goal just 10 seconds later after Nonis to make it 3-2 Bulldogs taking a long pass from senior
Jena Meaney (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph Hill Academy) and firing a shot into the left corner. Exactly three minutes after DSU took its third lead of the game, MVC countered and again it was Nonis taking a touch wide on a free kick around the wall and firing a shot into the far back post corner tying the score at three.
Almost five minutes later Manhattanville took its first lead (4-3) when
Morgan Rebollal decided to give Nonis some scoring help heading home a perfect crossing pass on the back post. That lead however lasted just 17 seconds as Walsh finished off her hat trick on a header of her own on a centering pass from senior
Amanda Fink (Nazareth, PA/Nazareth).
From there things settled down a bit on the offensive end. The best chance for a game-winner came just 2:56 into the first overtime when Nonis sent a shot past a diving DeSales keeper that seemed destined to cross the goal mouth just inside the far post as the Valiants began to celebrate, but the ball just connected on the post and caromed back onto the field and the DeSales defense was able to recover, clearing the ball out of the box, eventually securing the double overtime tie.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Wednesday, October 6th when they travel to Albright College for a non-conference game beginning at 7:00 pm.
