Center Valley, PA (November 20, 2010) – The DeSales University women's basketball team shot just 32.0 percent from the field and were out-rebounded 43-34 as the Bulldogs fell to the consolation game of the its Starter's Pub Tip-Off Tournament with a 39-37 loss to Ursinus College on Saturday evening in Billera Hall.

The 37 points are the lowest scored by the Bulldogs since a 74-32 loss to Messiah College in December, 2005. DSU (2-1 overall) wasted a terrific defensive effort as they held the Bears (2-0 overall) to just 27.5 percent shooting and into 22 turnovers but Ursinus dominated the glass, out-rebounding DSU by nine and corralling 18 offensive boards en route to a game changing 14 second-chance points in the win over the Bulldogs.

DeSales never led as Ursinus took a 7-0 lead as the Bulldogs did not score until the 13:17 mark on a short jumper from senior Shaina Dymond (Shickshinny, PA/Northwest). DSU pulled within six at the 7:01 mark of the first half but scored just two points over those final seven minutes as UC enjoyed a 24-14 halftime lead. Neither team was efficient offensively with the two teams combining to shoot 30.1 percent (16-for-53) in the opening half.

After Ursinus scored the first four points of the second half, DeSales started to show some life and began chipping away at the deficit. An 8-0 run after the Bears led by 14 with 17:47 to go pulled the Bulldogs within six at 28-22. UC pushed the lead back to nine at the 8:21 mark but the Bulldogs then went on a 9-0 run over the next five minutes to the tie game at 35 for the first time with 3:17 left to play. Freshman Sondrine Glovas (Easton, PA/Easton) scored the final four points of the run.

On the next possession, the offensive glass again came back to haunt the Bulldogs as Sarah Martin grabbed a Bear miss and was fouled, calmly sinking both free throws to give the visitor's a 37-35 lead. After a DeSales miss, an Ursinus miss, turnovers by both teams, and another Ursinus miss, the Bulldogs gained another chance to tie the game and with the called play broken, junior Hannah Smith (New Cumberland, PA/Cedar Cliff) improvised and hit a driving lay-up with 1:02 to go to re-tie the score at 37.

On the ensuing Bear possession, Lindsay Teuber beat her defender to the baseline was driving to the lane before junior Cherelle Simmons (Lancaster, PA/JP McCaskey) came over to help and seemed to block her shot but a foul was called on the body contact sending Teuber to the line. She also calmly sank both freebies to make it 39-37 with 43 ticks left.

On the inbounds pass in the backcourt, senior Lori Lidlow (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) lost her balance on the baseline and fell out of bounds handing the ball right back to Ursinus. After dribbling 20 seconds off the clock, the Bears head coach called timeout but Smith came up with a steal and passed to Lidlow who raced down the court with the ball, but her off-balance driving lay-up was off the mark as Diamond Lewis hauled in the rebound and was fouled with 5.9 seconds left.

Lewis missed both free throws but a last chance pass to Lidlow for a game-tying shot was tipped as the buzzer sounded, signaling the final 39-37 score.

Lidlow was the lone DeSales player to reach double figures with 11 points, but shot just 5-of-18 from the field. Simmons played well for the Bulldogs with eight points, 10 rebounds, and three blocks.

Martin recorded a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards, while Teuber finished with 10 points.

Ursinus will take on William Paterson University in the tournament's championship game on Sunday at 3:00 pm. The Pioneers took a 44-20 lead at the half of The University of Scranton and never looked back in the second half. April Smith had 25 points and 10 rebounds, while BriaAnna Lucas flirted with a triple-double with 14 points, seven rebounds, and six assists in the win. Megan Kopecki led Scranton with 21 points and pulled down eight boards.

The Bulldogs will take on former long-time rival in the Freedom Conference, Scranton, in the consolation game beginning at 1:00 pm. LIVE Stats will be available for both games and LIVE Video will be available to all who cannot attend the game for the DeSales/Scranton match-up.
