Center Valley, PA (November 21, 2010) – Four starters reached double figures and the DeSales University women's basketball team shook off a poor shooting day on Saturday with a 77-63 win over long-time foe The University of Scranton, 77-63, in the consolation game of the Starter's Pub Tip-Off Tournament on Sunday afternoon.

DSU (3-1 overall) shot just 35.8 percent from the field but were 36-of-42 (85.7 percent) from three free throw line in a game marred by 45 fouls called between both teams. DeSales also forced Scranton (1-2 overall) into 27 turnovers and held the Lady Royals to just 34.4 percent shooting.

After the two teams saw the lead change four times over the first three minutes of the game, freshman Sondrine Glovas (Easton, PA/Wilson) hit a three-pointer at the 16:50 mark to give the Bulldogs the lead for good. Holding a five-point edge at the 11:30 mark, the Bulldogs used a 9-0 run over the next four and a half minutes to build a 28-14 edge with 6:59 remaining in the opening half.

All five starters scored during the spurt capped off by a jumper from junior Hannah Smith (New Cumberland, PA/Cedar Cliff). Scranton rallied to pull within once more at the 4:04 mark but six straight points by the Bulldogs pushed the lead back to 11 before two free throws with 0.5 seconds left in the opening half made it a 38-29 game at the break.

In the second half, UofS pulled within six to start the half (46-40) and were within seven at the 12:31 mark before DeSales used a 17-4 run over the next five minutes to put the game away. Sophomore Colleen Gavin (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) led the way with six points during the game-clinching run.

Leading the way for the Bulldogs was senior Lori Lidlow (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) with a game-high 18 points, including a 10-for-10 effort at the line. Gavin finished with 17 points, pulled down nine rebounds, and had five steals, while junior Cherelle Simmons (Lancaster, PA/JP McCaskey) totaled 11 points and nine rebounds. Simmons was named to the All-Tournament Team for the Bulldogs after averaging 9.5 points and 9.5 rebounds in the two games over the weekend.

Glovas also reached double figures with 14 points and Smith finished with eight points and four assists in the win on Sunday.

Scranton saw four players each score 10 points including Jennifer King, Megan Kopecki, Tayler Pallotta, and Alison Sweeney. Kopecki earned All-Tournament Team honors for the Lady Royals.

In the championship game, William Paterson out-scored Ursinus 32-16 in the second to extend to a one-point halftime advantage to earn the win, 61-44. BriAnna Lucas took home MVP honors with 22 points on Sunday. April Smith also made the All-Tournament Team after a 25-point, 10-rebound performance on Saturday night. Lindsay Teuber led the Bears with 16 points and 12 rebounds, earning All-Tournament team honors along with Sarah Martin who had a double-double in the win over DeSales on Saturday.

DeSales returns to action on Tuesday when they travel cross-town to take on local rival Moravian College beginning at 6:00 pm.
