Bethlehem, PA (November 23, 2010) – Junior
Cherelle Simmons (Lancaster, PA/JP McCaskey) recorded her second double-double of the season but it was not enough as the DeSales University women's basketball team shot just 26.2 percent from the field, falling to local rival Moravian College, 66-46, in the annual local battle two days before Thanksgiving in Johnston Hall.
The Bulldogs (3-2 overall) did force 28 Greyhound (2-3 overall) turnovers in the loss but committed 25 miscues of their own on the offensive end. Moravian out-rebounded DeSales, 41-39, and blocked 10 shots in the game.
A back-and-forth start to the game saw Moravian break a tie at seven with an 8-0 run to lead 15-7. The Bulldogs pulled within three at 15-12 and trailed by four at the 5:04 mark before the Hounds used a 14-2 run to take a 33-19 lead before taking a 10-point cushion into the half. MC's
Amy Heffner and
Alexandra Blair combined to score 29 of the Greyhounds 33 first-half points.
The Bulldogs did start the second half strong, out-scoring Moravian 11-5 over the first 5:14 to get within four tallies (38-34) at the 14:46 mark. The two teams traded baskets over the next three minutes before Moravian put the game away with a 9-0 run that pushed a 46-40 advantage up to 15 points (55-40).
Simmons was joined in double digits by senior
Lori Lidlow (Toms River, NJ/Toms River North) with 11 points. Freshman
Sondrine Glovas (Easton, PA/Wilson) finished with six points and sophomore
Colleen Gavin (Quakertown, PA/Quakertown) pulled down nine rebounds.
Heffner finished with a career-high 30 points and had eight rebounds, while Blair totaled 10 points, five rebounds, and seven blocks.
Laura Jordan had seven points and 11 boards and
Katie O'Rourke came off the bench to score six points, pull down 10 boards, dish out three assists, and swipe three steals.
DeSales takes a few days off for the Thanksgiving holidays before returning to action on Wednesday, December 1st when they open Freedom Conference play with a huge early season game at Manhattanville College beginning at 6:00 pm in a rematch of last year's Freedom Conference Championship game.
