Wayne, NJ (March 6, 2010) – Senior Darnell Braswell (Allentown, PA/William Allen) was at his best on Saturday night and the rest of the DeSales University men's basketball was equally as sharp, cruising past Albertus Magnus College, 82-49, into the “Sweet 16” of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Tournament on Saturday evening for the second straight season.
If Braswell had any doubters, they certainly don't have a leg to stand on after Saturday's performance as he finished with 27 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists in 32 minutes of action on 9-of-14 shooting. But it wasn't just Braswell on Saturday as the entire Bulldog lineup had it going, both offensively and defensively, opening up as much as a 38-point lead before the final margin was posted.
The Bulldogs will now face Randolph-Macon College in a rematch of a game played back on November 29th that the Yellow Jackets won, 87-63. The game will be played on Friday night but a site and a time for the game will not be announced till Sunday. The NCAA will select the four “Sweet 16” host sites on Sunday afternoon and the game times for the Friday contests will be announced at the beginning of the week.
On Saturday, AMC (23-7 overall) did start out well, opening up a 7-4 lead but a 9-0 run by the Bulldogs led by five points from Braswell pushed DSU (24-5 overall) ahead, 13-7. The Falcons pulled to within three (15-12) a few minutes later but again DeSales answered with an 8-1 run to take a 23-13 lead.
Albertus chipped away at the lead and got within seven points (29-22) with 4:40 left but the Bulldogs pulled away with a 14-3 run to end the half, taking a 43-25 lead into the locker room. Senior Rob Schubach (Center Valley, PA/Southern Lehigh) and sophomore Bob Zanneo (Philadephia, PA/Father Judge) each had three's during the spurt and Braswell scored the final four points for the Bulldogs.
The second-half was all Bulldogs as they extended its lead to as many as 38 points and led by 20+ points for all but one minute at the start of the half. DSU torched the nets shooting 54.2 percent from the field and 92.3 percent (12-of-13) from the free throw line, while the Falcons converted just 24.1 percent from the field and 58.3 percent (14-of-24) from the free throw line.
Along with Braswell, sophomore Jamey Bercier (Stroudsburg, PA/Notre Dame) reached double figures with 12 points and senior Jim Malatesta (Warminster, PA/Archbishop Wood) added 10 points off the bench. Schubach had seven points, Zanneo and freshman Brett Moyer (Souderton, PA/Christopher Dock) each had six points and junior Brian Hunter (Allentown, PA/Emmaus) finished with four points, eight rebounds, and four assists in the win.
Walden St. Juste was the only player in double digits with 15 points for the Falcons, but shot just 4-for-23 from the field. Ray Askew added nine points and 11 rebounds in the loss.
