BOX SCORE (Game 2)
Washington, DC (April 2, 2010) – Senior Derek Moyer (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) hit two home runs and went 5-for-7 at the plate but the DeSales University baseball team dropped both ends of a non-conference doubleheader, falling 11-4 in the first game and 9-8 in the second game on Saturday afternoon at Catholic University.
The Cardinals (12-4 overall) scored in just two innings in the opener but that was all they needed as DeSales (11-7 overall) made five errors and were only able to cross home plate four times in the game one loss.
Sophomore Jack Kavetski (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) took the loss as he failed to get out of the first inning as CU staked itself to a 6-0 lead. Sophomore Kenny Ridge (Allentown, NJ/Steinert) and Moyer did most of the offensive damage for the Bulldogs, combining for five of the six DSU hits including two solo home runs (one by each player) and three RBIs.
The second game was a back and forth battle that saw each team score in five of seven innings. Trailing 8-5 entering the sixth inning, DSU tied the game at eight as junior Carson Slonaker (East Greenville, PA/The Perkiomen School) and junior Mike Newland (Frenchtown, NJ/Delaware Valley) each had RBIs and Moyer scored on a wild pitch.
Still tied at eight entering the bottom of the seventh inning, CU scored the game-winning run thanks in part to one Bulldog error as the Cardinals were able to scratch out a 9-8 game two victory.
Senior Joe Walsh (Green Brook, NJ/Watchung Hills) took the loss for the Bulldogs, his first of the season. Kavetski had a terrific game at the plate, going 4-for-5 with three runs scored and Moyer was 3-for-3 with two runs and his second homer of the day. Senior Andrew Feher (Riegelsville, PA/Palisades) was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and Newland knocked in two runs in game two. Sophomore Ethan Moser (Boyertown, PA/Boyertown) hit a solo homer in the loss.
The Bulldogs return to action on Monday when they host King's College in the second and third game of their three-game set at Butz Field beginning at 1:00 pm.
