Bulldogs Erase Nine-Run Deficit in 19-15 Win over Scranton

Junior Carson Slonaker had three hits and five RBI's in the win over Scranton.

BOX SCORE

Scranton, PA (April 6, 2010) – The DeSales University baseball team led 3-0 after one inning but a nine-run second inning by the University of Scranton and five more runs in the third and fourth innings by the Royals put the Bulldogs in a 14-5 hole after four frames, but the DSU pitching staff allowed just three hits and one run over the final five innings allowing the offense to explode for 14 runs over the final five frames to earn the comeback non-conference win.

On a day when most of the credit will be directed towards the offense, it is impossible to ignore the effort junior Mike Newland (Frenchtown, NJ/Delaware Valley) gave out of the bullpen. Newland pitching in his first game all season tossed 3.2 innings of spectacular relief allowing just two hits and one run to earn the win and silence the Royal bats. Newland along with freshman David Drinks (Mechanicsburg, PA/Cumberland Valley) and senior Mark Reilly (Cream Ridge, NJ/Notre Dame) combined to allow just there hits over the final five innings, striking out six.

DSU got production up and down the lineup including senior Derek Moyer (Harleysville, PA/Souderton) who went 3-for-5 with a home run, three runs scored, and five RBIs including the game-winning runs batted in. Junior Carson Slonaker (East Greenville, PA/The Perkiomen School) was equally as damaging with a bat, going 3-for-6 with a homer, three runs scored, and five RBIs.

Sophomore Jack Kavetski (Plymouth Meeting, PA/Plymouth Whitemarsh) was terrific out of the lead-off spot in the order with four hits including a home run, four runs scored, and three RBIs. Sophomore Nick Chiovitti (Thomaston, CT/Holy Cross) had two hits and three runs scored and sophomore Jason Hadinger (Northampton, PA/Allentown Central Catholic) added four hits and three RBIs. Sophomore Ethan Moser (Barto, PA/Boyertown) added a two-run home run.

The Bulldogs return to action tomorrow when they travel to Rutgers-Newark for another non-conference game beginning at 3:30 pm. For those unable to attend LIVE Stats will be available on the DeSales web site.
